But what response could they possibly give that would be satisfactory?

I only asked because I had a broken leg (different than hip breaks I know) but the swelling was so bad at first they couldn’t see the full extent of the fracture clearly so had to wait a few days and then re do it so I wondered if this was similar/ why it took so long to get results. They couldn’t set it in a cast either until the swelling had reduced a bit to prevent them just having to do it again. Was in hospital for a week with a broken leg because of it.

Only thing I can think of is that sometimes fractures aren’t obvious on an X-ray, which looks ok. However if the patient then can’t get up and about, a CT scan would be arranged later, which could then show the fracture. Maybe that is what’s happened here.

Nurse here. I would get onto PALS so that they can get on to the team looking after your Dad and have them contact you and give a full explanation of what’s been happening so far. PALS isn’t just for complaints!

also…depending on the type of fracture, and other health issues a patient may have, surgery might be delayed until a patient is more stable. I haven’t worked in orthopaedics for a long time but did have a patient this year on my ward who had broken a hip. The patient had other significant health issues (hence being on my ward rather than an ortho ward) which meant the orthopaedic team and anaesthetists wanted to stabilise patient first BEFORE surgery could safely happen (even then it was risky). The teams explored different types of surgery as well to see what would be the safest and most appropriate for the patient.

when you do speak to consultant/team looking after your Dad, don’t be afraid to ask any questions or get them to explain anything you don’t understand. I hope your dad has a very speedy recovery!! Xx

So so helpful

Many thanks
