Damaged my car, left a note but now ignoring me

Housemove2020 · 01/08/2022 18:43

Someone has damaged my car left a massive dent in the side while I was parked perfectly in the middle of the car park space. They left a name and number on my windscreen which I was grateful for however each time I call the number the woman tells me she “is unable to talk and will call me back.”

The last time I said can we just talk now to understand what happened with my car? (I have no idea at all how it happened because she would have had to smash right into the side to cause that much of a dent). She last said “I should be grateful she left a number” like why?! It’s not like she’s been cooperative since then. In fact why did she even bother leaving her number? Should I be grateful she left a number or is she now regretting being honest and trying to get out of it.

if it was me I’d be so guilty but also scared CCTV might get me!

Have you spoken to your insurance company .. can you just pass her details onto them to deal with ?

LIZS · 01/08/2022 18:45

Report to your insurer. They should be able to track down the driver.

GrumpyPanda · 01/08/2022 18:47

I'd call the police personally.

Pootles34 · 01/08/2022 18:47

How long ago was it? Do you have her reg? I think I'd just go straight to insurance anyway to be honest.

purplecorkheart · 01/08/2022 18:48

I suspect that she was with someone who left her name and number rather than her leaving it. I would message her so you have a paper trail giving her x amount of time before you pass her details on to your insurance

sunsetsandsandybeaches · 01/08/2022 18:50

Let your insurance and the police deal with it. You don't need to talk to her.

Housemove2020 · 01/08/2022 18:50

ive gone to insurance but not passed her details on yet. It happened yesterday. The insurance company said they could request CCTV if there is some there. But not sure if it covers that area

Thanks. Yes I’ve sent a few messages and will message tomorrow and say I’m passing her details onto the insurance company. I don’t have the car reg though.

Noodledoodledoo · 01/08/2022 18:53

I would try once more and end conversation saying you are now calling your insurers.

Housemove2020 · 01/08/2022 18:55

GrumpyPanda · 01/08/2022 18:47

I'd call the police personally.

How would I get in contact with the police though? I’ll def let the woman know I’ve reported to the police. It’s despicable that people think they can go around causing damage with no repercussions!

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 01/08/2022 18:57

I don't understand why you are trying to call her?

Just give her details to your insurance company and let them deal with it.

Fitbachick · 01/08/2022 18:57

I would report to the police as they should be able to get any cctv footage before it gets deleted.
Also pass any details of the other party onto your insurance.
Could you post for information on social media? Asking if anyone saw anything.

LIZS · 01/08/2022 18:45

I’m not sure they can track down without a car reg. well would be more difficult, I suppose they would try to pursue it.

FatherJacksBrick · 01/08/2022 19:10

Just phone your insurance and give them her contact details. They'll deal with it from there. If you want to be proactive, call the shop, explain and ask them to save the CCTV footage from that time. Your insurers can then ask the police to request the footage if they need it to back anything up.

Ring the police. She committed a crime by not leaving all her details.

Nugg · 01/08/2022 19:15

@Housemove2020 And by leaving the scene of an accident surely?

Nugg · 01/08/2022 19:16

Sorry meant to tag @sunsetsandsandybeaches !!

CapMarvel · 01/08/2022 19:16

All you need to get from her is the reg number, and then pass that over to your insurance company. Don't mess around asking her what happened -> she drove into your car, that's all you need to know.

AnybodyAnywhere · 01/08/2022 19:17

Someone hit me in a car park last week, didn’t leave a note 😡. Goes against me as a ‘Fault’ claim, doesn’t affect No Claims but will surely raise premiums plus have to pay £400 excess.

I can’t even put here what I would do to them if I ever found them!

Poshjock · 01/08/2022 19:17

I would contact the police through the non emergency number, she is obliged to leave her contact detail, name address and registration number. By not doing so she has committed an offence. Also inform insurance of the details she has left you and let them know you've informed the police

Nugg · 01/08/2022 19:15

Good point! Thank you all. I’ve just reported to the police online. And I’ll pass the details onto insurance tomorrow

Thatsenoughnow · 01/08/2022 19:25

Your insurance co might be able to find her address from her phone number. More likely they'll just pay your cousin and you'll have a fault claim on your insurance.

im so sorry people have no conscience! This is what I’m worried about. I might be better off just paying myself outside of insurance to avoid the insurance premiums if they can’t catch her

If it was a public car park (supermarket etc) they will usually have CCTV. If they do they can try to track down the incident & car registration.

sunsetsandsandybeaches · 01/08/2022 19:28

@Nugg if you're unable to exchange details at the time of the accident (eg. i you can't trace the owner) then it's not a crime as long as you report it to the police afterwards.

You must report the collision to the police if you were unable to exchange details at the scene, if anyone was injured, or if you suspect that the other person may have committed a driving offence.
