AIBU to think he needs a chest X-ray or scan?

My dad has a history of smoking. He’s 73, and recently has been having dizzy spells, culminating in him fainting at the weekend. He’s seeing the GP tomorrow because he reckons he has a chest infection - he’s not coughing or breathless but his chest feels ‘tight and uncomfortable’. He has nail clubbing which I’ve been nagging him to mention to the GP for ages. AIBU to think this all adds up to a potentially serious lung or heart issue and he should push for further investigation under the two week referral pathway? He’s being bloody awkward and refusing to take it seriously, and I can’t go to the GP with him as I live at the other end of the country. So frustrating!

So very sorry to read this: my sincere condolences.

Oh I’m so sorry, you really did your best within the confines of what was realistically possible; please don’t let yourself get dragged down by what it’s.

minmooch · 21/11/2022 18:02

I'm so sorry. Please don't torture yourself. You encouraged your Dad to seek medical help and he did. He was an adult and chose to probably ignore his own health problems and he was allowed to do that.

I'm so sorry to hear this op. Thinking of you 💐

I’m really sorry to hear about your father OP x

Thanks everyone. It’s just so upsetting thinking he was close to having his operation. The hospital actually called as the paramedics were carrying him out of the house, to give him his operation date! Horrible timing.

That phone call must’ve been brutal @SilverGlassHare. Life can be so cruel but the better memories will start to come back to the forefront and those are the important ones x

Oh my gosh, what an awful update. I'm so so sorry OP. Please try not to blame yourself. X

alanabennett · 24/11/2022 03:59

I'm so sorry. I'm sure it's scant consolation but you did everything you could. May he rest in peace.

LunaTheCat · 24/11/2022 05:23

So sorry - what an awful thing for you.
I hope it helps but I am guessing even if he had gone to his GP when you where so so worried it would have probably made little difference … his heart would have been likely too badly affected.
take care 💐

VioletTopaz · 24/11/2022 05:30

I’m so very sorry Op, sincere condolences. 💐 You did everything you could for him.

@LunaTheCat , he did go to the GP.
I'm sorry, OP.

OrlandointheWilderness · 24/11/2022 07:01

So sorry to hear that op. You did what you could - at the end of the dad your dad was a grown up with full capacity in charge of his own health. Thinking of you.

SilverGlassHare · 28/11/2022 11:05

So now I'm having chest pains. I'm pretty sure it's related to stress and anxiety... it's been going on since he died. Is it likely a doctor would suggest anything to tackle this aside from time off work? I genuinely don't think they're anything other than psychosomatic as I wasn't getting them before.

So sorry about your Dad. I do think you should talk to your GP about chest pain - it may be related to grief but let them decide if you need any tests to rule out a physical cause. A chest X-ray, ECG and bloods are easily arranged. If they can do an ECHO as well then that would rule out most structural issues with the heart.
If all is clear then if you are in England you can self refer to IAPT - often called things like iTalk, Talking Change who can help you with physical symptoms of anxiety.
