To not understand FRIENDS merchandise aimed at (young) kids

Shopping in Asda today, there were a few items of 'FRIENDS' branded clothing aimed at young girls. The smallest size was 5/6 years.
Do children this young watch Friends? I presume they do, as otherwise why would they want logoed t-shirts etc.

I'm quite surprised as I'm watching reruns of the shows myself as my 11 year old has been pestering me to watch it and I'm trying to decide if it's suitable for their age group. I am still on the fence as to whether I think it's ok for a 'young' 11 year old but certainly wouldn't want a 5/6/7/8/9 year old watching it. I can't imagine they'd find it interesting either at that age.

My friend’s daughter is 10 and is obsessed. Has watched every episode and when we played a game on it recently, she put all the adults to shame! Every adult there was born in the eighties so perfect Friends age and we barely knew a single answer 😆

YANBU. I hate slogans on children's clothes too. My biggest hate is tops with bands that even their parents would have been far too young for.

It really perplexes me, and I find it slightly sinister.

Meh. We like music and we’ve got our kids into the same music. They might be ‘too young’ to know the bands but not if they’ve been listening to them since they were babies.

Asda must have got a job lot at a low price.

I’ve never been into Friends. Cheers and Frasier are vastly superior in every way - but you don’t get Frasier T shirts. Would be great if you could.

The running 'joke' in many of the episodes was Joey sleeping with women and not calling them again.

Even back when the episodes were brand new I thought this was a ridiculous storyline, so wonder what youngsters think about that?
Young guy spends the night with a stranger woman, she obviously falls in love and is desperate to see him again, man hides from her in order to seek a new stranger woman to 'sleep with'

Much preferred the Sex & the city narrative ( though obviously not suitable for kids 😁)

I watched it when I was 8 so did a few of my friends,
I thought joey was a bit of a knob for not calling the women back-but all of the others tell him its rude/sleazy so its not hard to make that conclusion even as a child.

Most of the ruder jokes went over my head but it was still funny. I don't think any of us were watching it as year four children in the UK and thinking that a show about 30 somethings with relationship problems in the 90s was relevant to our lives. Nobody was getting their moral code from friends, it was just a silly show on e4.

My kids have been raised with friends on in the background. My ten year old loves watching it with her dad on a Sunday morning, my little boy is five and we have introduced him to some of the early Simpsons episodes and it's his favourite show.

Sometimes the 90's classics are the best. They also both like the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and I've shown my daughter a couple of episodes of Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

Yes, you do! My dd has a Frasier one bought online.

I will have a Google, thank you!

I think it's a good thing. Not all children are the conventional size for their age and some children will watch friends while wearing age 5-6 clothes. We have the opposite problem. My dc is tall and has learning difficulties. It would be lovely if asda did peppa pig clothes in size 11-12 or even clothes that aren't mostly grey/black/khaki.

miltonj · 03/08/2022 11:27

Me and my friends absolutely loved friends when we were 6 and used to get the videos from blockbuster and watch them at sleepovers. We're all about 30 now. So not impossible that they would enjoy it!

There is plenty of time for your child to enjoy stranger things. I’m sure you will @ me and say how mature your child is and how they aren’t scared - but they’ll have a much better experience if they can truly understand all of the subplots and relationship dynamics rather than seeing it as a very scary version of the Goonies.

find a mate to watch stranger things with if you can’t bear to watch it by yourself. It’s wholly inappropriate.

Dont think she asked for your opinion…. Had to chip in anyway though with your unsolicited advice.
