To think I did the right thing?

Money is tight and I can't afford a holiday but a free caravan for a few nights came up so I snapped up the offer. I was going to take my DD (8) and her friend. They were both so excited.

However, on Friday my daughter became unwell and spots emerged. So she has the chicken pox, however, she is feeling okay but just itchy and a bit tired.

I've just cancelled the caravan holiday as her friend hasn't had the chicken pox and even if she had they couldn't go out anywhere obviously because my DD has it.

I will admit I thought about just not telling the other mum and covering her up but that would be extremely out of order wouldn't it?

I feel absolutely rotten for both girls, they were so excited and my DD is in tears begging for it to go ahead. I feel terrible and have been in tears myself.

I have said I will take them out for a day and then she can have a sleepover but I did the right thing yes? I have this guilty feeling like I'm just being dramatic and have ruined everything.

Yes

yes it would. I guess you could have floated the idea with the other Kim and said it was up to her?

ruvyallan · 31/07/2022 15:29

I really didn't want to float the idea incase other mum thought I was an awful person for even considering taking DD out whilst infected

You did the right thing OP. I can understand it’s upsetting for you to see the girls so disappointed, but you’ve not cancelled it out of spite, you’ve had genuine reason.

There will be other opportunities.

LetMeInYourWindow · 31/07/2022 15:35

Yes you did the right thing.

hesttreat · 31/07/2022 16:02

You did do the right thing, what bad luck though.

ruvyallan · 31/07/2022 17:39

Thanks. I know such bad luck. Proper gutted 😢

So sorry this happened, but you have absolutely done the right thing.

bubblescoop · 31/07/2022 18:08

I would have still gone on holiday but not taken the other child.

MadMadMadamMim · 31/07/2022 18:12

Of course you did the right thing!

I'd have been raging if someone hid the fact that their child had chicken pox just to take my DD away with them. Please don't take your daughter out if she has something infectious like this. Other people don't want it.

Bagzzz · 31/07/2022 18:13

Of course it was right, hard to understand the doubt. Anyway as you said all three of you would have been stuck at the caravan so your daughter did no infect anyone else. I’m sure the girl would have just called her mother if she called home.

DDivaStar · 31/07/2022 18:20

Tbh I would have gone just not taken the friend. Days outside and staying away from people should be manageable.

noirchatsdeux · 31/07/2022 18:45

When I was 10 my mother made me fly halfway across the world with chickenpox...all because she couldn't trust my cheating father to keep it in his pants and obviously that was more important than the health of her only daughter/a plane full of people.

I've often wondered since how many poor people I (unwillingly) infected on that 16 hour flight...

You've done the right thing.

bubblescoop · 01/08/2022 01:45

@noirchatsdeux It's chicken pox, not the plague 🙄

Chicken pox can be serious and cause serious complications for some people though. Pregnant women, people recovering from cancer, people who have had a transplant, people with low immune systems and it's not just a case of being a bit itchy and having some spots. One of my cousins was hospitalised with it when we were kids as it caused some issue with her lungs.

It might be rare but it can be a very nasty infection for some people, even with vaccines. The pp could easily have had several people on her plane who would have increased risk of complications and worrying she might have caused serious illness to other people isn't that dramatic.

I would go as planned if past the contagious phase, you didn’t say when you were scheduled to go but contagious phase ends once all of the pox are crusted (Google says 5-6 days from appearance) so bear that in mind if it’s a few days away? If you’re due to go soon then it is definitely the right thing to do albeit rubbish
