…to want to make money?!

Totally/slightly inspired by another thread!

Growing up, I was told I mustn’t be materialistic by both parents and that I must train in a role where I should make a difference, and it shouldn’t be about the money or my dreams. By my two mortgage-free parents.

I’m single and childfree (happily so and by choice etc etc). I don’t want to buy a property with someone else and I am the type of person who needs to live/be alone.

I haven’t had a penny of help from my smug, critical parents (“stop buying gold-plated Jo Malone avocados, and you’ll have a flat in Richmond, dear”), and have to rethink strategies to be in a position to buy bricks and mortar!

Is is so wrong to be looking to retrain in something that pays well first and foremost, rather than something that helps the world/yields job satisfaction? I don’t think it is, and quite frankly, I am still not a homeowner and wish to be ASAP!

The job I feel I’m most suited for (and others have agreed in this) is in OT, but I’m not willing/able to pay 10k per year for a 2 yr post-grad course to- once qualified- fight for a job that’ll pay £21-23k. Not feasible, unfortunately, but a truly lovely job.

What area would YOU retrain in that will quickly get you somewhere financially?! Although I’ve been in the career wilderness in recent years (MH struggles and on ASD spectrum so currently languishing in admin), I am a qualified teacher and got into law school and other post-grad courses over the last decade, so not completely stupid.

Interested in design, finance, education, law, tech and digital marketing, and happy to spend a bit if needed, but time is of the essence and I want to get qualified and working in something lucrative before 2023.

Any ideas?!

And yes, I have posted similar threads before as I really want/need to make changes to move on.

Thanks!

Sorry, no help but watching with interest….

Nothing wrong with making money. Doesn't really matter what your parents say.

WhatTheWhoTheWhatThe · 31/07/2022 12:07

I’m an OT could you consider doing it as an apprenticeship maybe? I think you’re also under estimating how much you can earn. I make circa 50k a year as an independent practitioner.

Also there is a massive shortage of OT’s in my area you really wouldn’t have to fight for your first position.

it’s probably a bit naive to think you can retrain and be earning lucrative money in the next six months without investing time, money, training and work experience to get there! Everyone I know at the top started at the bottom!

If you want to make money and have an interest in Law and Tech then Data Privacy is a good area. It's becoming more and more important as every country starts to bring in their own versions of GDPR.

Data analysis is a big growth area so have a look at that

The interests you are listing are very broad. I think it would be helpful to get yourself a good career coach and work out what you actually want to do all day, because that will help narrow it down.

If you want to be earning good money quickly that’s helpful, because some paths - eg educational psychology will close off.

How old are you? It sounds like you’ve been jumping around on different courses and stuff. There’s nothing wrong with that, but you need to get rid of the ants in your pants if you want to increase your earning power. On this note you seem very angry with your parents, it’s important that you put that to bed and focus on taking responsibly for your own life, so think about some therapy.

My son, my sister & brother -in-law work in IT and are paid very well, above average - my sister did a science degree not IT but did a conversion course for a year and so did her partner- he originally studied German.

The people who ask this question rarely end up making the money they desire.

Thanks in particular to @Luredbyapomegranate , and I will reread your post as I found it to be v pertinent.

And that’s v interesting, @WhatTheWhoTheWhatThe- a pleasant surprise, if I’m to be honest!
