I'm not sure about oodies-are they good or are they too heavy and/or too warm?
We have gas central heating, crap double glazing with those vent things that let in a draught. I'm in a rented house so I can't do anything about the windows. I've bought thermal curtains for the draughty patio door and front door. I close all the doors to keep heat in rooms. Lights get switched off. I've bought a ninja foodi to reduce the use of the oven.

What else can I do? Please share your tips.

@alspoj - thank you for the tip!

Mountain warehouse has a big sale on at the moment. I got thermals for the kids reduced from £17.99 to £5.99. Worth a look.

I second this. Had a look last night and some massive bargains. Just bought hoodies, fleeces, base layers etc for my son and it was ridiculously cheap.

I just bought a load of womens' thermals from Mountain Warehouse for my mum.

However, if you're a little bigger, you should try Lux Lux thermals. It's a proper old-school British company, who make them here in the UK. I was recommended the merino wool stuff by a fellow mumsnetter. They're for a family friend, so I haven't tried them myself, but they look grand. The full price was very similar to the mountain warehouse sale price.

The family friend is poor and managing on her pension. She has no central heating and uses oil heaters/halogen heaters. I have made her a cold-weather pack of:

electric throw (can be unplugged and simply put in washing machine)
proper sheepskin slippers
2 sets of Lux Lux thermals
Turtle doves cashmere gloves and fingerless gloves (seconds are cheaper)
real Oody (can't comment on how it feels, as it comes shrink wrapped)

I'll also get my husband to go round with some insulation/sealant for the windows and doors and put a curtain over the front door.

@CinnamonJellyBeans thanks to your recommendation for Lux Lux, have ordered several items at very decent prices. I am constantly cold and always looking for bargains for heat..

Lidl and Aldi without fail do them every year aswell.
Headbands that skiers wear are brilliant and u can get away with wearing them more.feels better than a wooly hate in the house or out!
Put bubble wrap in your letter box.
Tissue stuffed in key whole.
It's about layers not one big thick item.
Soup.hot drinks.hot meals if u can.if not comforting meals always make you feel more cosy, settled emotional and physically seteated and therefore warmer.
Those with anxiety remember you get chills and feel colder( to the bones) in times of stress or anxiousnesss because your heart is working over time and for more important organs, roles.so try all your techniques to get that down.

Also those heat up packets.stick em in your kids coat pockets.where them on your chest!

Happylittlethoughts · 05/08/2022 08:04

My elderly Mum has used these for years. They only take a few minutes in the microwave to heat up. The heat lasts ages. She sits with one on the couch at night and keeps one in bed too.
They are not squishy though or super hot but it's a steady heat. Often advertised as pet warmers , but she wouldn't be without hers as great for elderly.
Less than £20.

Thanks for the heat pad recommendation @Happylittlethoughts . I had no idea that there was a microwave pad that can actually retain heat energy for so long.

The snugglesafe is marketed as a pet heat warmer, I get almost 10 hours heat from mine. £14 on Amazon, I ignore the paws on the cover.

BobBobBobbing · 05/08/2022 14:52

DH bought me one of those pet warmer things- not as snuggly as a hot water bottle, but the leat lasts for ages. I really recommend them.
