To be concerned by the new “smart glasses”

I’m talking about the ones Ray Ban have brought out with Facebook (of course) where wearers can record and take photos using their sunglasses. It feels like a huge data privacy concern not to mention the obvious worries around creeps using them to film children and people without them being aware. Does anyone know much about them?

Oh no. Creepy.

Irridescantshimmmer · 29/07/2022 21:43

Ewwwww that is cringe

NoseyNellie · 29/07/2022 21:52

Cant help but think you’re a little late to the party on this - Google glass came out 9 years ago and ‘smart glasses’ predate this. There’s even an episode of Black Mirror that addresses a society where everyone records everything all the time.

Anyhoo, this article covers some of the pro/con arguments

Snapchat had something similar a few years ago and I said the same back then, at least with those ones it was somewhat obvious they had cameras on. Stupid idea.

yardstickbarbedstick · 29/07/2022 21:56

this is interesting and worrying.
there is too much filming going on already for my liking

EmmaH2022 · 29/07/2022 21:57

Oh dear
I thought this shit had gone after google glass wearers got attacked.

At lease with those hideous glasses pictured you’d stick out 😂 the rayban ones just look like normal sunglasses.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 29/07/2022 22:00

Google Glass got kayboshed for this reason. Trust Facebook to try and resurrect the idea.

Fenella123 · 29/07/2022 22:05

New? They came out ages ago. And afaik absolutely nobody was interested in the wretched things.

carefullycourageous · 29/07/2022 22:08

I also thought all this with Google glass, it is a privacy issue.

britneyisfree · 29/07/2022 22:13

My DH has a pair. He jumps onto the latest tech whenever he can.

I've used them a couple times but always feel awkward as I'm worried people might think I'm filming them rather than just trying to catch my daughter laughing etc for my memory box without sticking a phone in her face!

I hadn't thought about all the things mentioned on the thread but yes, it's true. Could be used for bad.

They can't be used covertly, they have a light which flashes when a picture is taken and comes on and stays on when a video is.

britneyisfree · 29/07/2022 22:14

And they are normal sunglasses - they darken etc in bright light and can be used as normal glasses if you give them your whatever it is opticians use for lenses

even so...

grim.

I have noticed a lot of people stand on the Tube and position themselves so their face can't be seen. At first I thought it might be covid related but lately I have wondered if it's to avoid being filmed, or just to avoid the horrible visual clutter and sensory overload.

watcherintherye · 29/07/2022 22:20

Sebastian uses them a lot when gathering evidence in ‘Shakespeare and Hathaway’!

Jalisco · 29/07/2022 22:22

If someone wishes to covertly film something they don't need to spend £100+ on some obvious and widely advertised sunglasses that are instantly recognisable. There is a myriad of choices on eBay for under £20, and likely nobody would notice. I think you have missed about two decades of tech.

Prescription

DramaticSunflower · 29/07/2022 22:30

To film someone you would have to be staring straight at them. It’s hardly a discreet way to film someone. 😂

arrogantorwhat37 · 30/07/2022 08:04

Don't tell James Bond about these....

Ponoka7 · 30/07/2022 08:18

I can see them being used for sinister reasons, people getting a punch because they've been accused of recording and them being mugged for them. They aren't waterproof at all, so you only have to throw water/a drink at them. They'd be great for getting videos and pictures of pets, especially dogs, who won't act naturally with a camera pointed at them. Wildlife as well actually.

maloney123 · 30/07/2022 23:30

Right. And as a Mum with my hands constantly full and my eyes on my child I’m definitely keeping an eye on who is around us / potentially watching or filming us. Ditto groups of women going day drinking, dressed up in short skirts / low tops etc. your post screams creep sorry
