Need some advice my grandson is 16 and has high functioning autism. He has a part time job in my daughters office in London. Occasionally her and his step dad allow him to drink alcohol ( I'm not happy about this) Yesterday she let him go out with work colleagues without her and he had to get home alone on the train. I'm scared for him do I say something? My daughter and I have a fractious relationship. What's more baffling is that they are both recovering addicts and obviously don't drink!

He is underage and drinking , so I can see why your worried.
I hope someone has some advice for you , but I hope he'll be ok and doesn't drink too much before he comes home.
I don't think your being unreasonable to be concerned.

Surely it is the parent’s role to decide what he can cope with though? Getting a train alone isn’t really that crazy in this situation, am I missing something?
Many people with autism live normal lives and he isn’t far from adulthood, he needs to experience some freedoms.

No, don’t say anything. None of your business. What is your business is your feelings of anxiety - perhaps caused by a feeling of loss, related to your grandson growing up or even you getting older and the passage of time perhaps?

I6 is old enough to catch a couple train.

I'm not surprised you have a fractious relationship if this is the level of interfering micromanagement and judgemental bosom-hoiking she has to contend with.

Lots of people let 16yos drink in moderation. It's not great, but it's not illegal either, and it certainly isn't any of your business.

Allowing him to travel home unaccompanied - he's 16! I have an older teenager with autism. He's been travelling all over the place alone since he was about 14. Once again, it's a question of that particular teenager's ability to manage - and if his mother has decided that he can, it isn't for you to gainsay her.

Not necessarily underage drinking - the OP hasn’t given enough detail to know.
