Just need a quick rant before getting back to work.

Been on eBay for over a decade selling. Friend asked me to list something as new when it wasn’t!

Got a really angry message this morning with lots of: !!!! from the buyer.

I immediately responded, with apologies and issued a full refund. They replied again in a furious manner. Again I apologised and emphasised I had sent a refund.

They replied calling me “Disgusting” and am now waiting for the negative feedback. First time in a decade and I feel really bummed out and annoyed by it!

What was the item to be 'disgusting'

IIama · 29/07/2022 11:44

@Hankunamatata It was a fish tank filter, so I can definitely see where they were coming from. Didn’t seem anyway to calm them down though.

If you knew it was used why would you list as new? I can see why they are annoyed!

girlmom21 · 29/07/2022 11:46

Why did you falsely advertise it?

Hankunamatata · 29/07/2022 11:47

Well that was totally crappy of your friend.

IIama · 29/07/2022 11:48

Sorry for the confusion. I didn’t know it was used. My friend told me it was new, so I listed it as such. They just sent me pictures of it in its box to use for the listing.

I totally understand why the buyer is annoyed, I would be if I was them. And I’m really annoyed by it too.

Your friend is the issue here. You need to take this out on them. They must have known it wasn't new.

IIama · 29/07/2022 11:49

Friend is now claiming that they forgot it wasn’t new as it’s been in it’s box for so long. Ugh.

10HailMarys · 29/07/2022 12:03

Your friend is the problem here, so be annoyed with them, not the buyer who was misled.

IIama · 29/07/2022 12:12

@10HailMarys To clarify I’m not at all annoyed at the buyer.

I’m annoyed at the whole situation and in particular my friend. Just feel upset to have negative feedback after having carefully managing my account for more than a decade. All because I did a favour for a friend.

AFAIK, If you refunded the buyer they can't now leave you negative feedback. I wouldn't worry about one negative feedback anyway. Try not to stress about losing 100% positive feedback, its just not a big deal if you are an honest seller.

DeusInAbsentia · 29/07/2022 13:29

It's been many years since I kept fish, but cant parasites and diseases transfer as well in used filters?
I'd be annoyed as well.

AFAIK, If you refunded the buyer they can't now leave you negative feedback

I don't think thats true? They can still leave feedback unless the whole transaction is cancelled.

MsFrenchie · 29/07/2022 13:31

Well that’s a painful lesson learned then. Is is possible that your friend knew it was used so preferred you to take the risk and not her?

girlmom21 · 29/07/2022 11:46

Why did you falsely advertise it?

Read the post again.

girlmom21 · 29/07/2022 13:39

@moomoosixtytwo there was nothing wrong with my interpretation of the initial post. OP clarified afterwards that she didn't know.

amylou8 · 29/07/2022 14:01

I'm a full time eBay business, I sell used/recycled items from house clearances. I'm very very careful about how I list things, and have a good track record, but occasionally I mess up and do something like this. It happens. Most buyers are understanding as long as you do what you can to put things right. You've just been unlucky and got an unpleasant one. They may neg you, again it happens. Just reply to it factually. Buyers generally aren't put off by a small portion of negs, and those that can't see past a couple in a sea of positives are best avoided anyway.

Hellodarknessmyoldpal · 29/07/2022 14:04

YANBU to be annoyed with your friend. That was shitty of them. You could try explaining the situation honestly to the buyer and hope they won't bother with the feedback. An avid ebayer in my family keeps a small stock of things they offer as a goodwill gesture should any issues ever arise. Lesson learned either way and 1 bit of negative feedback isn't the end of the world.

mam0918 · 29/07/2022 15:00

You might not get negative feedback.

I never bother to leave a review if I got a refund, I only leave a bad review if the seller was a twat about it.

SalviaOfficinalis · 29/07/2022 15:09

I’d be annoyed at the friend too. Although to be honest I think they’re pretty cheeky to ask you to list it in the first place, presumably because they couldn’t be bothered to spend 5 mins setting up an eBay account?

ABBAsnumberonefan · 29/07/2022 15:38

Your friends taken the piss here! They could’ve set up an account themselves in minutes, wonder why they didn’t 🙄 lesson learnt I guess OP as annoying as it is!

SunshineLaughter · 29/07/2022 16:49

How annoying!! I've been selling on eBay for years. My hubby asked me to put some running stuff on his behalf. I didn't understand mens sizing etc so just put down the info he told me to. I got such an awful negative review from someone, my only negative. I'll never do it again!

TemperTrap · 29/07/2022 16:53

When I've been asked to list things, I've always offered to help them set up an account for exactly this reason.

Maybe that's a bit mean but we all have different standards and I want to know what I'm selling is in good condition, listed accurately and not dodgy.
