Ulcers

Sorry I am missing AIBU I know but I haven't got any response on the health topic so here is my question

Hi. I have just come home from work and my DD has shown me her lip. I will be honest and say I thought she was moaning about nothing to get out of going to bed last night but it looks really sore. It is swollen and she says her whole jaw hurts. Is this just an ulcer and what can we do, if anything, beyond bonjela?

My AIBu is I guess - ami unreasonable to have not done anything to sort this thinking it's 'just' an ulcer!?

When I get them I dilute tcp and swish it in my mouth like mouthwash. Stinks though🤢

i find hot tea works, sort of burn the pain away.

It doesn’t look like anything worse than a nasty ulcer to me. I sympathise because they can be so uncomfortable, but it’s also hard not to poke at them with your tongue/teeth and I suspect that might be why it’s a bit swollen.

Anbesol liquid is very good for numbing ulcers but it does sting like hell for a second when you first apply it.

Greentomatoes21 · 28/07/2022 20:57

I would go into a chemist and ask them to confirm if it is an ulcer. If so, anbesol liquid is far and away the best thing for numbing the pain. Bonjela or anbesol gel tend to just slide off whereas the liquid targets the area better. Another treatment offered in chemists is corlan pellets. Rubbing these on the area can result in it clearing more quickly. It is form of hydrocortisone I think so unsure if it would be given to a child. I get mouth ulcers and have done for years, but mine are more a clear circular/oval shape and white/grey in colour with some surrounding redness. It is hard to see from the photo if she actually has an ulcer or just redness. Ulcers are incredibly painful and last about 7 days, with pain at its worst in the middle days. Yes they can cause jaw pain, difficulty eating and talking etc and sometimes even make you feel a bit 'under the weather'. Hope it clears up quickly for her!

Greentomatoes21 · 28/07/2022 20:58

I sometimes need to take paracetamol half an hour before eating if I have a really bad one - you could consider a couple of doses of calpol if it's really bothering her.

marrymeadam · 28/07/2022 21:10

@Greentomatoes21 the whole outlined section is one large ulcer if that's what it is. I will give her some paracetamol and ask a chemists advice in the morning. Thanks all

Ouch! That looks very big. Yes, ask in the chemist. I hope she gets sorted x

CockSpadget · 28/07/2022 21:29

Looks more like an abscess than an ulcer. Definitely take her to a pharmacy for advice

Ganymedemoon · 28/07/2022 21:49

Looks too large for an ulcer to me, yes more like an abscess. Slightly concerning that her jaw hurts with it. Has she got a fever? Is she feeling ok in herself? May need antibiotics so would see if you can get a GP appt tbh.

BakedTattie · 28/07/2022 22:00

Yep. I get ulcers larger than a 50p piece. They are agony.

warm water with teaspoon of sale in it, swished around and spat out, or if she’s old enough, corsldyl mouthwash.

marrymeadam · 28/07/2022 22:34

@BakedTattie she is 12 so should be ok. I will ask tomorrow. She isn't feeling well to be honest. She feels sick and a bit dizzy. I will definitely take advice from the pharmacist

Bless her, it does look full of pus so her body will be reacting to it.

She probably needs antibiotics if she's systemically unwell with this too. You could try your GP but I imagine they will suggest your GP for antibiotics.

I meant pharmacist! Who will probably suggest GP for antibiotics.
