I just need somewhere to rant... at the shop earlier paying part cash (10p,5ps) etc and the remainder on my card for dinner.

I get outside and one my neighbours kindly offered that if we're ever short or stuck to give her a shout, i thought this was really lovely of her but declined her offer as tomorrow is payday and we'll be fine going forward... i come home tell my dp and ever since he's mopped about, banged doors and complained about being embarrassed.

Would i be unreasonable to tell him to wheest?

I can't be the only one who knows not all comments are worth repeating especially if they could be upsetting!
If op and her husband had no financial troubles, the comment would be amusing as I have paid in small change to get rid of their weight from my purse but if you know you are hard up I just wouldn't say it to my husband.

Yes unless everyone is liberally-minded and thinks like you it must a joke @Burnamer ok Sherlock.

We're not hard up, its the day before pay day and we've purposely ran the freezer down and relied on the "penny jar" as known in my house 🤣 i explained this to my neighbour and she was laughing along with me

I don’t know either of those words but I can grasp it from the context.

What do people do with their loose change if they won't spend it in case someone they know sees them and thinks they're struggling financially?

I don’t think I’ve had loose change for a good few years now. The only thing to use cash for is the hand car wash, and that’s £10 per time, so no small change given.

I never correct SPAG on here but you sound like you'll take it in the dry humour it's intended OP...

I hate to break it to you, but it's "moping" Grin

I have no idea about any of the slang here either, but I'm here for it! I can't do any Scottish accent, wish MN would let me post my feeble attempts via audio Grin

If I was out for dinner and friends started counting out 5p's I'd be mortified . I'd feel bad that they'd come out when perhaps they couldn't really afford to and I'd feel sorry for the cashier having to count them all .

As for OP her husband is probably annoyed that the neighbour now knows ( and subsequently probably half the street ) that you are struggling and it's a pride issue for him . Traditionally , in the last few decades men have been the providers and a wife counting out pennies is a clear indication he isn't .

SaintHelena · 29/07/2022 08:08

I'm a bit surprised at the neighbours behaviour - do they hear regular money arguments from you?
Was it a male or female (or something else) who offered to help you financially - may be relevant to DH's behavior.

I pay 6 pounds for a carwash

FWIW my coins get saved in a bottle and yearly swapped out at the Sainsbobs coin star

😂😂 what a load of tosh! Women have been working for the last few decades and have had no need for ‘providers’. If you mean many women stayed at home up until around the late 70s that’s probably true, but not the last few decades. Counting out 5ps and 10ps and topping up using your card is simply a way of getting the loose change out of your purse, not an indication of someone being on the breadline. What a bizarre notion.

Ha ha Are you serious?
OP didn't say she was struggling and the whole 'man as the breadwinner' notion is way outdated.(thankfully)

Thankfully we are both fortunate enough to be both working so haven't a clue where the embarrassment has came from tbh... after bills and my food shop today i might consider taking her up on the offer (JOKES OBVIOUSLY!)

I pay 8 quid, but depends on size of your car. I always give them a tenner though because I think they work bloody hard and reckon the men take the lion's share of the cash. The women go above and beyond as well.
