They can afford to pay the share holders dividends but they can’t afford to help keep costs down for those who are struggling

Capitalism at its finest!

PM programme discussed this.
They are making high profits because expenses to extract are same as ever but wholesale price has soared.

I'm not sure we can ban capitalism globally.
They are selling crude at the price because someone is wiling to pay it and couldn't find anyone selling cheaper.

I posted this article on another thread which is worth a read for a different perspective. They’re a business not charities as the article points out and the current situation is not their fault. It is however certainly unfortunate that they are obliged to publish their profits at this time!

Windfall tax is the answer. Proper one, not the one the Tories introduced with exemptions.

Groovee · 28/07/2022 18:17

Yet their staff aren’t getting a pay rise….

Tangled123 · 28/07/2022 19:28

@Groovee Is that true? They’re really evil and greedy enough to give away more than half their profits in dividends but nothing towards pay rises with all the other cost increases? That is low. F ‘em.
F ‘em all.

Shortjanet · 28/07/2022 19:57

I just think they're taking the piss out of the lot of us now.

Boxowine · 28/07/2022 19:57

Interesting how many people defend capitalism and how market price is determined by supply and demand but forget that the invisible hand doesn't include governments interfering in the marketplace.

Paying for wars to secure Iraq oilfields, using sanctions to control which countries can sell oil, propping up dictators in friendly countries, opening up public lands for drilling are all examples of ways in which the supply of oil is manipulated in favor of certain petroleum producers. So yeah, I think that the government should be allowed to interfere with pricing too.

This dire situation we are in was talked about way back when essential services were beginning to be privatised. We were promised a fair service with competitive prices and a better service than could be provided under public ownership. It is a disaster and proves that it doesn't work as we are now in the perverse position of spiralling prices and record breaking profits.

My hubby works under the centrica brand and he’s not had a raise since he was tuped to them in 2019.

They lost a lot of gas staff over the pension issues too.

Yes. Whatever it takes to make this happen.

Sounds rubbish, is he in a union?

Centrica are laying a lot off. A friend in quite a high up role has just been made redundant

This article shares the reasons the writers believe privatising energy has caused such high prices even taking into account that wholesale prices for gas and electricity are high at the moment due to covid and Ukraine.

“Supporters of privatisation claim that it benefits consumers, as market competition between suppliers should lead, in theory, to lower prices. In reality, the opposite has occurred. Even before the current energy crisis began, domestic energy bills steadily increased in “real” (ie inflation-adjusted) terms by 50% from 1996 to 2018. By early 2022, energy bills are expected to continue to increase by more than 30%. Over 3 million people in the UK are now estimated to live in fuel poverty.

Why has privatisation failed to deliver? A key part of the problem has to do with oligopolistic concentration in the energy sector. Though there has been an influx of smaller companies in recent years, the energy market is dominated by a handful of large companies: Centrica, the parent of British Gas, EDF Energy UK, E.ON UK, npower, Scottish Power and Ovo, which recently acquired the retail arm of SSE.

Often referred to as the big six, these companies control 77% of the UK household energy market. In addition to charging higher prices to consumers, the energy companies display many of the maligned characteristics associated with oligopolies: fat profit margins, use of outsourcing and layoffs, and the funnelling of billions of pounds to shareholders through dividend payments.”
