Why do people post on community Facebook groups when they’ve found something like a driving licence? For the first, driving licences can be put in a postbox, and the address is on them! Is it virtue signalling?

ecample post:

driving licence found today on road pm me to collect by the end of today. I work in so u could collect from there

comments:

thats so kind of you to post it on here rather than just chuck it!

I'd be really grateful to see a post like that if I'd lost something as it would save me the worry and uncertainly between losing it and getting it back. I think it's helpful.

HandbagsnGladrags · 28/07/2022 10:29

I find it more annoying when people post questions on FB groups which they could have just asked Mr Google.

chipsandpeas · 28/07/2022 10:31

maybe they dont want to pay postage

Rantypanties · 28/07/2022 10:32

Those posts don’t bother me as much as the condescending admins of these types of groups who are a little power hungry.

katkit · 28/07/2022 10:32

Err.. that’s the best way to get it back to the person? Why would you take issue with this?

Agreed. Some FB group admins are batshit.
OP have you seen the price of a stamp lately?

I don't mind the ones where they've found an item like a driving licence or Oyster card etc. As pp said, if the person is on the group, or linked to someone on the group, it will reassure them that it is found before they receive it back.

The ones that annoy me are "Does anyone know this cat? It's been sitting in my garden". Yep, that's what cats do, they wander!

BeanieTeen · 28/07/2022 10:43

I agree it’s stupid. Some people are well meaning I’m sure but also a bit dim, obviously not everyone in town looks at the local spotted page. I don’t go on FB often, and I don’t follow the community pages as mostly people just post shite but I will occasionally check it out if I’m bored. DH doesn’t have FB. So much good it would do me if someone found one of our cards and posted about it on there.
And some people are just busy bodies and attention seekers.

girlmom21 · 28/07/2022 10:43

It's saves a lot of hassle. It's £25 to replace a lost driving license which I'd be liable to pay if I didn't know someone had found mine.

Yes, but what used to irk me the most is when people posted in one of those groups titled "Off topic etc. etc. " and begin the post with "this is off topic sorry but..."

redskyatnight · 28/07/2022 12:27

I find the "found child's teddy by playing fields; have taken it home with me" posts more annoying. If the child's parents are looking for the teddy they are not necessarily going to be on FB and they are quite likely to retrace their steps and find said teddy if you'd just left it where it was.

NotMyRealSelf · 28/07/2022 13:59

Posting on Facebook could get the item back to person on the same day and save the person who lost it a lot of stress worrying and maybe save them time looking all over their house for it and possible save them money too if they go to purchase a replacement not knowing someone has found it and popped it in the post.

I don't think it's virtue signalling at all. It's trying to get someone's property back to them quickly.

I know quite a few people who've got their kids lost things back via Facebook. Its the first place some people check depending on the amount of steps they have to retrace.

My toddler niece lost her jellycat and because my sister didn't Toni's if it had been dropped in town, on the bus, or the walk home it would have taken her two hours in steps retracing and no guarantee she'd get the same bus. She checked her local Facebook and the town she was in local Facebook and someone actually had found it.

If it's an expensive toy or teddy , some people pick it up and take home in case the next person who see it just keeps it.

A women who lived about 3 doors down from us posted in our local fb group recently about my dog with a picture of me walking her asking if anyone had lost her as she suspected she had been stolen by “teenagers” as she’d only seen the dog walked by an older lady before that week. We’d moved into our home less than a month before and was having our kitchen fitted so wasn’t safe for my dog to be at home so she was saying with my mum a 5 minute walk away, that’s who she had seen walking her to start with. I commented and said we was her neighbours, I’m definitely not a teenager but I appreciate the compliment, and that our pup was in fact our dog then explained the situation, she blocked me but kept the post up. 🙄 We managed to get in touch with the admin of the group who removed it. Luckily a lot of the comments were saying if the dog didn’t belong to me then maybe I was a dog Walker or pet sitter or even a relative of the owner and why didn’t she just speak to us before posting but there was also some really horrible comments calling me names and saying some pretty derogatory things about teens.

I think some people just like the drama and being seen as the “hero” tbh.

CruCru · 28/07/2022 15:16

There’s a woman on my local Nextdoor who keeps posting photos of random (healthy looking) cats outside doing cat things and asking if they are lost / belong to anyone. It’s got to the point where people are getting a bit shitty with her and pointing out that cats go outside from time to time.

Littleduck80 · 28/07/2022 15:27

For me it's the ones (and it's usually women) who post complaints about other peoples driving. They always start with "To the person who...." and then whine on about some minor sounding inconvenience that makes them feel like a superior driver. I wish I had the guts to reply and ask what they actually expect to achieve from that post? Especially given as I live in a tourist destination and the chances are the criminal you mentioned probably doesn't even know this page exists, never mind actually be a member of it.

Also agree about the cats thing @CruCru . It's become a new trend where I live. "Does anyone own this very happy, healthy looking cat I saw in the street.". So Odd.
