Or looking for reassurance that I’m not.
I live in a tenement in a roughish area of a big city.

The front door of the flat directly below me has been open for a while now, definitely over a week. Not just a peep, flat against the wall open.
When I first noticed it, I assumed it had been left open by accident. Knocked, called out- no answer so I just closed it thinking the tenent had left it open by accident.
since then it has opened again, and has stayed that way 24/7. There might be some work being done (no noise or anything though) and the flat looks very “lived jn”- coats hanging up, etc. I haven’t been brave enough to go in yet.
I called 101 tonight because I’m a bit worried about whoever lives there. I don’t know them, I suppose they could have gone on holiday but then why did the door open again??
101 have said they’ll do a check, but they may well be thinking keep your nose out, we’ve got far more pressing issues.
YANBU- yes, that’s weird. Something is definitely off.
YABU- get a grip, it’s none of your business.

You done the right thing IMO. Police will do a welfare check.

Thank you, my theory at the moment is that the occupiers have gone away, and somebody has broken in twice because they know they are away. Why leave the door wide open though. It’s very strange.

I agree you should report it. I hope everything is okay.

A welfare check was the right thing to do, the police carry out this sort of thing routinely all the time. Do you know anything about who lives there? My elderly neighbour with dementia used to leave her front door open, as (in her mind) she didn’t know if her children might get home from school whilst she was out.

I don’t know anything about the current tenants, it’s quite a high turnover area with students etc. I don’t think it’s an elderly person simply because it’s two tenement flights up, and I know it’s been occupied by students fairly recently. I suppose that’s not impossible though.
