have you had a child go through this? If so, how old were they? What was the reason? How did your child react to the procedure? What were they like after? Any information / advice would be grand.

I don’t understand why someone voted I am being unreasonable. Do explain…

There are people on MN who would vote YABU if you said the sky is blue.
10 months seems very young for that. They were hand-wringing before my 7 month old’s CT scan (although that was Ireland where the doctors are very fearful of litigation) so I’d imagine similar strong justification would need to be done behind the scenes.

Arrrrrrrrrgh · 27/07/2022 20:49

(mostly I’m posting to bump for you as I’ve no idea)

Kitavon · 27/07/2022 20:54

Do the doctors think your child has an intussusecption where the bowel has folded in on itself? A barium enema can correct this.

No one is happy to have an enema but it’s not necessarily painful and if it is for the above it could correct a bowel problem without surgery.

PurpleRayne89 · 27/07/2022 21:10

@Arrrrrrrrrgh Absolutely, it seemed absurd for the vote. Each to their own. Thank you for your bump and I did think it was very young. However, the surgeon requested it.

@Kitavon No, suspected Hirschsprungs Disease. Wanted to do this instead of something more invasive such as a biopsy under general.

Yes a few here from 4 months old.
I don't think it would exclude or confirm hirschprungs though.
It's not fun and to be honest I'd rathe rout my child through a scope and biospy.
Hope whatever happens it goes ok

PurpleRayne89 · 27/07/2022 23:39

@Rekorderlig88 Thank you for contributing. It’s m not looking forward to it again he bit. He has chronic constipation so they want to look at the inner workings of his bowel. Apparently it’s commonly used as a first step investigation for HD.. if it shows abnormalities, next step will be a biopsy.

whst was your experience and do you have any advice?

Just a quick update in the event someone in future might find themselves in the same position as me.

Attended scan. From start to finish, took roughly 30 minutes. No crying or fussing, he didn’t even flinch when the tube was placed into his bottom and the fluid was being pushed around. Little messy afterward, I’d say that was the worst part about it.

Hopefully future folk find this helpful.
