To take DS passport to a restaurant?

Just booking a family that has a set price list. DS 10 looks more like 13-14, he's very tall. Prices for kids 9-11 is £10 cheaper than 12+.

Is it weird to take his passport, just in case, or would you expect the restaurant to just accept our word for it? Or knowing he's the size of a teenager anyway, should we just pay more for him? Some of the food is served, and some buffet style and he can put away an adult portion. Confused

So would an adult pay child prices if they wanted a smaller portion?

I suppose they could ask but as someone who for health reasons has to eat small portions often throughout the day I just pay for the adults meal If ever in a situation where there’s a difference in pricing would crop up.

Or I suppose if I really wanted my moneys worth I could let a greedy bugger at the next table have some of my food allowance to devour just to make things even Stevens.

I'd take a photo of the page on your phone. DS always looked a year younger so I knocked a year or two off his age for a buffet as he didn't eat much back then anyway. I'm sure it's common so they may ask. I think height is a much better way to do it.

Sorry, why would someone who can for whatever reason, eat more than you, need to be a greedy bugger and why would they devour it.. rather than say just.. eat it.

Just because YOU eat small portions, doesn't mean someone who eats more than you is some sort of disgusting hog.

To get back to the point, if the restaurant prices by age, then yes take the passport in case of dispute.

Its entirely up to the restaurant how they price, but if it is a buffet or carvery, kiddo may get a small kids plate rather than an adult plate for that price. If you think thats a risk and he eats adult portions, pay adult prices and ensure you get an adult serving for him.

Is it weird to being ID somewhere you think you might need ID?

No.

Frazzled2207 · 26/07/2022 20:31

I think if he is likely to eat like an adult he should pay like an adult
if OTOH the child looked 15, was actually 10 and was happy with a child sized meal then ywnbu to take a passport to prove it

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 26/07/2022 21:17

I just pay for the adults meal

But that is because you are....An Adult.

A 10 year old is not.

jessieminto · 27/07/2022 09:12

Thanks everyone for the replies.

To clarify, there is no childrens menu it's all the same food. Some of it is served on the plate and portioned out by the kitchen and some of it is like the salad bar at Pizza Hut where you can help yourself to as much as you want.

I've decided to take his passport and pay for the kids meal.

DS will eat enough for an adult. If he is served a smaller portion from the kitchen because he's a kid then that is more than fair and reasonable. I often order from kids menus as I eat smaller portions and will undoubtedly share my food with DS anyway. He can tuck in to the salad bar if he's still hungry.

I'd just take a photo of the relevant page.

Love it when the first response is a blindingly simple solution!

Places that do it on height are so much simpler! Its really hard to tel how old a child is just by looking. My DD isn't exactly short (about 152cm, age 11) but her best friend is a foot taller

Oh yes please. I have a very small DS. He's 23 but the size of a young teenager. He doesn't eat much either.

The above was said in jest.

but I hope you feel all the better for your outburst.

You pay by age. They realise some kids will eat adult sized portions. In the same way as some adults eat bird like portions.

Take the passport, saying you always bring it as you realise he looks older than he is.

Job done.

This. I don’t believe half the people on here saying they’d insist on paying over the actual price when they don’t need to? 🙄

Watapalava · 27/07/2022 21:13

Of course you pay child price

doesn’t matter what he eats!

But, as the saying goes, ‘many a true word spoken in jest’. The negatively loaded language you use - greedy, devour - does indicate a judgemental attitude towards people who eat more than you.

I hope you’re better at your day job than you are at being a part time armchair psychologist.

And if you saw me you’d realize just how silly you are.

Sandsnake · 27/07/2022 21:55

This thread is peak Mumsnet 😆

Agree with others - pay for a child’s meal and bring a photo of the passport. Hope you have a nice time!

How insulting! Part-time armchair psychologist is my day job Grin

Sorry if I upset you, though.

Flubbler · 27/07/2022 22:14

Definitely do it. I’ve just paid full price for a ticket for my 2 year old DD for a show that is free for under 3s, but she is so big that nobody would have believed me. I wish she had a passport I would have definitely taken it 😄

Mardyface · 27/07/2022 22:19

I don't know why you would pay for an adult if he's a child. If the restaurant was bothered they'd make the rule differently. I would take a passport or something for my 11 yr old who looks about 22 but would likely nibble at a roast potato and a lettuce leaf.
