Royal London hospital please help

Sorry posting here for traffic

We have to go to royal London hospital with our 8 month old, we will be going from Chelmsford, please can someone recommend the best way for us to get there? There is no car park for the hospital and the website says there is limited metered spaces near the hospital but we will be there overnight as she is having surgery so this isn’t an option. She absolutely hates travelling in any form so I’m really anxious about getting there. Please if anyone can recommend the simplest way with the least chopping and changes between trains/buses I would really appreciate it. We don’t know the area of London at all. My mum said could we get an ambulance transfer to take us but I don’t know how this would work/if they would do this for us? If anyone knows anything about that I would appreciate any advice. Thank you

Try www.royalfree.nhs.uk/howtogetthere
Gives train, tube and but info
Hope all goes well

I used to work at the Royal London Hospital- Whitechapel tube station is directly opposite the main entrance to the hospital, so if you can park at any district line station (further out towards Essex) then hop on and travel westbound, that should be straightforward. Hope all goes well for her xx

Do you mean the Royal Free? There is a car park but it's woefully small.

I'd get to Stratford by tube/train and get the overground from thereto Hampstead Heath. It's just up the road from the hospital.

Clymene · 26/07/2022 12:07

Ah not Royal Free! Ignore me

Immaterialatthispoint · 26/07/2022 12:08

Chelmsford train to London Liverpool Street, it’s about 40 mins I think. Then two mins on the Elizabeth line to Whitechapel tube station. The Elizabeth line is all disabled friendly so will be even easier with a pram.

Immaterialatthispoint · 26/07/2022 12:10

Honestly so easy from Chelmsford. Less than an hour between Chelmsford train station and the hospital door.

underneaththeash · 26/07/2022 12:10

Try this website - we used it when my son was having at op at the Portland.

But driving won’t be any quicker, you’ll need to pay congestion charges and if the child hates travelling, I’d say an hour in traffic on the m25 and in central London when you can’t take her out of the car seat sounds harder than an hour on a train where she can move more freely and play.

greenacrylicpaint · 26/07/2022 12:20

you could also consider parking at stratford/westfield shopping centre and taking the tube (or bus) to whitechapel. have not (yet) taken the elisabeth line which is fully accessible.

all the best to you and your lovely dd.

PancakesWithCheese · 26/07/2022 12:21

You won’t get ambulance transport unless your baby is on oxygen or has some sort of complex care that requires an ambulance.

As a pp said, Whitechapel tube is almost directly outside. Get the train from Chelmsford to Liverpool Street and change to the tube.

MarinoRoyale · 26/07/2022 12:24

You can park at the Sainsburys which is a couple of minutes walk from the hospital but you can only stay 2 hours. Otherwise as others have said, Whitechapel tube is directly opposite the hospital m.

MarinoRoyale · 26/07/2022 12:25

Sorry I just saw you are staying overnight 🤦🏻‍♀️

ElegantlyTouched · 26/07/2022 12:44

If you can park somewhere on the Central Line the switch from the Central to District Line is simply across the platform.

limitedperiodonly · 26/07/2022 12:52

There's an NCP nearby. www.ncp.co.uk/find-a-car-park/car-parks/london-whitechapel-high-st/ I haven't used it but my brother who lives near you did when my SIL was ill. I think there is 24 hour parking. It's outside the congestion zone if you are coming from Essex and easy to get to on the A12/A13. There are other private car parks nearby too.

If you can come by public transport it is very easy. Whitechapel tube station is across the road and it is a few stops on the District Line from Liverpool Street. I takes about an hour to get to Liverpool Street on the overground from Chelmsford.

You can use the Elizabeth line content.tfl.gov.uk/elizabeth-line-map.pdf to get to Liverpool Street if any of the Essex stops are drivable to you. All the tube transfers are within the stations.

I'm a frequent flyer at the Royal London. I can go by tube but it really is easy if you live further away. It's world class and your daughter is in the best hands. The canteen is good for eating and waiting around in when it's open and there are other places inside the hospital where you can wait and decent nearby places where you can eat especially if you like Indian food. Good luck.

Mamapep · 26/07/2022 12:55

Whitechapel tube is directly opposite, or get an uber from Liverpool street.

limitedperiodonly · 26/07/2022 13:00

Sorry it looks like it's Metropolitan Line from Liverpool Street but it's still very quick content.tfl.gov.uk/standard-tube-map.pdf

ParvuliThankYouDebbie · 26/07/2022 13:07

As PPs said there’s an NCP a short walk away. Although the journey from Chelmsford is really easy via Liverpool St to Whitechapel, I can see why you might the comfort of your car, especially after the operation. Why not look at Yourparkingspace.Co.Uk? There’s currently a space for rent very nearby in Varden St. And a bit further in Brady St.
Hope everything goes well OP.

Soonberaining · 26/07/2022 13:12

We have a blue badge and were allowed to park in a space for two days. I asked several times if we should move, but told to stay.

Whitechapel tube station was closed at the time.

We stayed overnight in a nearby hotel which had no parking.

PP's idea of parking further out and using the tube is a good idea if the station is open.

Happyfeet876 · 26/07/2022 13:15

We live in chelmsford and travel to the hospital regularly. We tend to get off at Stratford and then hop on central line to mile end then district to whitechapel. Its just opposite the hospital.

Driving and parking is very difficult.

Those suggesting tube best thing would be to drive to upminster as its the closest district line station ( 25mins from chelmsford) and also the start of the line so would get a seat it takes you straight in to whitechapel. Not sure if you can leave your car in upminster station overnight.

Butteryflakycrust83 · 26/07/2022 13:29

Def get the train to Liverpool Street and then Elizabeth Line to Whitechapel.

londonmummy1966 · 26/07/2022 13:57

I second the recommendation for Justpark - you can rent a driveway nearby overnight and it saves the worry of trying to find a parking space especially if you have to travel on a rail strike day.

The Royal Free is a totally different hospital miles in the wrong direction, FYI....

acuteanxiety · 26/07/2022 14:01

Just park app? Xxx

Appleblum · 26/07/2022 14:06

I used to go to royal London for my appointments. There is no parking there but it's a very easy walk from the Whitechapel tube station or Whitechapel dlr.

I wouldn't take an uber personally as London traffic can be very congested. The tube is more reliable.

If you're looking for somewhere to stay may I suggest Wapping or Canary wharf which are nice neighbourhoods along the river and also have the DLR which will take you to Whitechapel.

Nanny0gg · 26/07/2022 14:10

Are there train strikes due tomorrow? - Hope not
