Airbnb request for reimbursement

I came home yesterday from a three night stay at a lovely Airbnb cottage, left a glowing review last night.

I have now received a reimbursement request for £156 to replace a single bed that they are saying we broke.

I don’t believe we broke this (it was my friend’s children who were in the room using the beds), they have attached a photo of the damage.

I have messaged my friend to check with her kids if this was damaged whilst we were there but what do I do?

If the kids did break it, would you expect to pay for a brand new bed I.e. could it not be fixed with some wood glue?

If the kids say they didn’t break it, do I refuse to pay anything? Assuming they’ll leave me a shitty review?

They very much cannot be fixed. You want them to glue the bed back together??

The child’s mother has to pay for the damage, just as you would anywhere surely.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 25/07/2022 20:24

its not reparable. However, I think it could be counted as wear and tear if it's quite old.

Has your friend offered to pay for it?

Rekorderlig88 · 25/07/2022 20:27

Ah yes your friend will need to pay.
Lesson learnt by kids I'd say.
Move on and hopefully forget about it

ChaToilLeam · 25/07/2022 20:27

Your friend’s kids broke it so she should pay.

It’s weight bearing glue won’t work and they might have had to cancel or adjust the next booking.

Update - my friend’s child has admitted to breaking it. I still think it can be fixed rather than buying a new one?

Then your friend needs to pay.

TolkiensFallow · 25/07/2022 21:19

It’s not repairable. It needs replacing. They may have insurance they could claim from but they’ll leave you a shitty review.

How much are they billing you?

girlmom21 · 25/07/2022 21:27

You can't expect them to fix it. If it collapsed on their next guest they could be sued.

SD1978 · 25/07/2022 21:30

Your friend needs to pay for it. Her child broke it, knew they'd broke it and covered it up at the time. Whether you think it can be fixed inst the point- the owners feel it needs replaced and I'd be unimpressed if I sat on a bed that then broke because of a bum repair job. You need to accept your paying for it

Viviennemary · 25/07/2022 21:33

If the child admits to breaking it. Ask the child for the details of how it broke.
,Shouldn't really break though. Agree it looks flimsy..maybe it was on its way out. They should claim on their insurance. Thats what its for.

Sapphirejane · 25/07/2022 21:39

I’m rather anti Air BnB and I still think you should pay for it then ask your friend for the money back.

justasmalltownmum · 25/07/2022 21:42

Pass the bill on to your friend.

SylvanianFrenemies · 25/07/2022 21:45

It can't be fixed.
You/your friend needs to pay.

FastandLoose · 25/07/2022 21:49

I’m not sure why everyone is so determined it’s not repairable, presumably to OP wasn’t necessarily just thinking to glue it together, but, you know, use wood and metal and fix it properly. Whether the owners can be bothered with that or would rather get a brand new one is another question.
Ultimately, if the child broke it messing around more than reasonable, youre
going to need to pay a fair amount, but they should have a more solid bed to let out the property really.

Shoxfordian · 25/07/2022 22:00

Yeh your friend should pay for it

Loics · 25/07/2022 22:04

Given that the kids definitely broke it, your friend should pay.

MaggieFS · 25/07/2022 22:05

Such a shame the child didn't own up whilst you were still there as you could have had a good look at it.

If you have reason to think the bed wasn't up to the job i.e. not a sturdy rental proof bed or it was very old and well worn then your friend could offer e.g. £100 towards the cost of replacement. Otherwise pay in full.

WeAreBob · 25/07/2022 22:07

They've made a bad choice for a bed in their rental. That's a folding bed which folds and slides underneath the actual single bed. They've bought a single bed with a slide out occasional and they're using it as a permanent bed in a rental. That was always going to break with regular use.

Unfortunately, you'll probably still need to pay but I would argue that it wasn't fit for purpose.

velvetblanket · 25/07/2022 22:10

sorry if I’m being dim here but wouldn’t the air bnb owner normally have insurance to cover for this kind of thing?

BrianWankum · 25/07/2022 22:15

We stayed with dd in an Airbnb which she had booked which said it slept 6 - two double beds and a sofa bed which was a tiny two seater sofa which just folded outwards to give an area of about 150x90cm, i e smaller than a single bed and only a very small child could sleep on it. It was also the only seating in the house apart from two dining chairs. The next night dd and a friend were sitting on it and it collapsed underneath them. They asked her for about a week to pay for it, which she was absolutely not going to do, and then just stopped. So I think they will always try it on.

Why are people anti Airbnb?

SavingsThreads · 25/07/2022 22:16

Imissmoominmama · 25/07/2022 22:15

Why are people anti Airbnb?

Because of the impact on the housing market, particularly in seasonal areas
