Give hypnotherapy a try?

I’ve struggled with weight for years and currently need to lose around 4 stone. Tried every diet, they all work to begin with but then I slowly creep back to my old ways of bingeing and the weight comes back on again. Thinking of giving hypnotherapy a try, something I’ve never done before. Does anyone have any experience of it? Has it worked/not worked? It’s £300 + so a lot to lose if it doesn’t work. Thanks for any advice!

I think that of you really want something to work it will but you have to keep on wanting it to work. Like you say you’ve dieted lost weight - then instead of continuing with your eating regime you go back to adding an extra snack or start eating puddings again and the weight creeps on. The diet plan didn’t fail it was just that you didn’t continue on it as you were.

You need to find why you can't stick to a diet/maintain after a successful diet. Hypno might be right for that, or another type of therapy to find a cause

From what I recall, Paul McKenna was heavily promoting this approach a decade or so ago. If it really worked, we’d surely all have done it by now and weight struggles would be a thing of the past?

Not everyone has weight struggles because they can't stick to a diet though. It works for some people, especially if they're willing to put effort in to it

Hi there, I'm a hypnotherapist so coming at a different angle but it depends what you're looking for. There are different approaches to this.

From my experience it's about changing the relationship we have with food and the unhelpful thought and behaviour patterns we have associated with it. Whether it's a source of comfort or yo-yo dieting that restricts and leads to binge eating.

It's about intuitive eating and tapping into your own resources to bring about positive change that is sustainable and doesn't keep you trapped in unhelpful cycles around food - it's finding what works for you. If problems are underpinned by stress, anxiety or depression then we'd work on that to help you make better choices for your overall well being. (Side note, stress can make us retain weight).

There are other approaches too such as gastric band hypnosis. It's not something I practice so I can't comment on that. It's worth looking around and finding an approach that feels right for you and a therapist you connect with. Hope this provides some insight and helps :)

I just did a search for hypnotherapy and found this thread. Was wondering if you tried it or not?

I didn't try it in the end no- but I did manage to lose a lot of the weight (3 stone) with intermittent fasting. Managing to keep it off so far and I found the fasting easy after the first week or 2 of getting used to it.

Ah, thanks for getting back to me. IF is brilliant isn't it. Have you read Fast Like A Girl by Mindy Pelz? I'm a hypnotherapist and I try to recommend my clients do IF alongside the work we do together (I go quite deep with my clients into their childhood trauma which shows up a lot). What I love about IF is that it really helps to curb the cravings and so much else is healed too.... aches and pains etc, the body can heal quicker. I find it very empowering. Congratulations on your win! You're an inspiration.

It really is yes! It’s the easiest thing I’ve tried (and I’ve tried pretty much all diets) and it really does work. Thanks for the recommendation, I have not read that one - I’ll get it. I’ve been reading Fast, Feast, Repeat by Gin Stephen’s and she has lots of videos on you tube that are really interesting. Lots of other benefits as well as the weight loss yes - although I’m still waiting on the sharper mind I’ve been promised :)
Thanks so much!
