To be nervous about Montelukast?

DC is 19m old and in and out of hospital with repeated bronch/viral induced wheeze. He's been in almost every 4 weeks this year which has been utterly draining.

We've now been prescribed Montelukast but within a 20second Google I am terrified to give it to him!

Does anyone have any positive or negative stories of giving it to a toddler?

What is worrying you so much?

It's a fairly standard medication recommended by the British Thoracic society asthma guidelines.

Hi op, ds1 used to be on it. It meant he didn’t suffer with his asthma which would have been far worse.

My daughter had it from 20ish months old. She was absolutely fine. It did nothing for the wheeze though and she was eventually prescribed a preventer inhaler that has solved it.

I have read that it can change their personality (!) and give pretty hideous night terrors!

DS had it from a similar age. It didn’t have much effect so they stopped prescribing it. I did notice short-term hyperactivity with oral steroids given for an acute attack, but not with Montelukast.
Has your DS got a Preventer and Reliever inhaler?

All medication have side effects that sound scary but for them to be licensed the risk from them will have been balanced by the benefit.

ds has been on them for 12 years and has had no issues

My DS had it around that age and I have to be honest, it did give him really bad D&V.

However, he was taken off it pretty quickly and given Prednisolone instead, which has never caused anything like that, he just goes a bit loud and silly for a day and then sleeps for hour, it does wonders though when his chest is bad

Oh God, I really feel for you. Please try not to worry & know that it won't last forever.

Our toddler was exactly the same for several years - he suffered with really bad viral induced wheeze & always seemed to be catching a cold/cough which would set him off. It was the scariest time ever & so exhausting - he was constantly in & out of Paeds ICU.

He was referred to a Paeds specialist to try to control it better. He took various preventer inhalers & at one point was on Montelukast for 6mths or so. I'm not convinced it made any difference, to be honest. It certainly didn't appear to give him any side effects, though.

He was also on a low-dose antibiotic for the Winter 3mth period one year & that didn't really have any effect either.

The best approach ended up being Prednisolone - it was an absolute Godsend- the only thing that helped. The Paeds doc convinced the GP to prescribe it for him & re-fill it as & when I asked, without necessarily seeing him, so I always had some in the bathroom cabinet.

I knew the early signs of an attack really well & used to get a dose into him ASAP then tail the dose off over the next few days - that, along with regular doses of ventolin, watching him like a hawk & co-sleeping to monitor his breathing through the night (= no sleep whatsoever!) was the way we got through it!

It would always kick off in the middle of the night & he'd get very bad, very quickly, so having Prednisolone in the house without having to wait to get him to the GP the next morning was essential. The side effects of it horrified me but, fingers crossed, it didn't seem to have any adverse effect on him at all.

If it's any consolation at all, he grew out of it by the time he was around 7yrs old. At one point, I seriously never thought he would - it was relentless.

However, he's now a super fit, healthy, sporty 15yr old, who's almost 6ft tall, with size 10 feet, so the 'stunted growth' Prednisolone side effect certainly didn't come to pass!

FurBabyMum02 · 24/07/2022 20:08

I've been on it for about 7 years now due to having issues with allergies and lip/toungue swelling. Can't say I've experienced any side effects but obv it might be different for an adult.

My DD 13yrs has been on Montelukast since she was 17 months old. She ended up being on aggressive combination treatment for asthma. Now at 13 she is athletic, healthy and has come off everything except seretide and Montelukast. It really changed her quality of life for the better and we have had no side effects.

DD 8yrs old has also been on Montelukast since the age of 1. She has been on seretide and Montelukast combined treatment and has had no side effects. Before we were constantly needing nebulisers. She has only had a nebuliser because of Covid.

Both girls now have well controlled asthma and are happy. Stay away from Google!!!

My DD took it for about 5 years. Got her asthma under control and never had issues. If you are concerned about nightmares, take it in the morning rather than at night.
