To use or to chuck insane accumulation of toiletries?

I am not a hoarder. Except seemingly I am an accidental one when it comes to toiletries

I am having a declutter and have found that I possess:

7 bottles of various shampoos in varying states of emptiness
6 x conditioners as above
7x bottles of retinol lotions and potions, mostly unopened
5x unused bars of fancy soap
4x hand creams
A whopping 17 x bottles and tubes of various hair serums, gels, creams and mousses.

In addition, loads of random things like pillow spray, bath essence, body milk and essential oils that I have no idea what to do with.

Most of these are gifts, or bought in desperation when I was having a bad hair/skin day.

There’s hundreds of pounds worth of stuff here!

Should I:
A) Keep it and work my way through it over the next 6 months, as not doing so would be wasteful. (YABU)

B) Bin / donate everything unwanted and free up two whole drawers at the bottom of my wardrobe. (YANBU)

Before anyone suggests it I am not going to re-gift anything as I pride myself on giving thoughtful gifts!

I have quite a hoard and would like to donate to a refuge. How do I go about it?

caringcarer · 24/07/2022 21:41

Use up anything open but if you have.lots donate to food banks.

greenacrylicpaint · 24/07/2022 21:47

just use it up.
lotions are great if you need to clean your hands after gardening or putting the chain back on the bike.

shampoo/showergel etc you can use as delicate/wool laundry detergent.

I can relate. I have over 50 bottles of shampoo and conditioner, 30 tubes of hand cream, 25 different deodorants, 10 face serums etc (mostly unopened). it all takes up a floor to ceiling wall unit, a 7 foot cupboard and a large bathroom cupboard. And this is after halving my collection over the last year. Come the apocalypse I will be able to keep the whole neighbourhood going!

Oh wow! And I thought I had a lot!!

Love the idea of using shampoo to wash laundry and recycling!!

Any alternative ideas for ‘curl defining serum’ and hair mousse type stuff?!

Only 5 bars of soap? Pfft. Amateur.
Soap is better for seasoning, ie leaving to harden off, they last longer and don’t go soggy. Stick em in your knicker drawer like your granny did.

My dad mocked my hoard before covid
I was surrounded by posh soap and bottles of hand wash smugly Grin (I ended up taking loads to work as we couldn't order any!)

Solasum · 24/07/2022 21:50

Get rid of it all on the Olio app

PeloAddict · 24/07/2022 21:50

I mean I do get gifted stuff but this doesn't include makeup...

Consolidation works for me. Means I get all the benefits of each shampoo in one giant pump bottle. Shower gels mix too, as do bath oils, bubbles etc. The only thing I wouldn't mix is facial skincare as it's better to use specialist products for your skin issues than mixing them all together

elfycat · 24/07/2022 22:01

I use a dab of nice smelling body wash as the cleaning agent when wiping round the bathroom. Scents that I find a bit strong, or not quite me, to wash with.

Acts as an air freshener.

I'm using a solid shampoo in bubblegum at the moment :) It's all soap!

C152 · 24/07/2022 22:09

I wouldn't do and either/or. I would use what I like / is practical, like the soap; give the unopened potions away (if they're still in date) or use (if they're your favourite) and, if the shampoo bottles are years old, bin them. If they're less than a year old, use them up. Don't buy anything else until you've used up what you've decided to keep of the old stuff.

AdoraBell · 24/07/2022 22:11

I would use it but if you don’t want then donate the a food bank.

HernamewasMary · 25/07/2022 18:03

To donate to a refuge contact Women's Aid or Refuge in your area.

Lastminpanic · 25/07/2022 18:55

Salí hughes runs the beauty banks- think they have drop off points outside Superdrug etc

ilovesooty · 25/07/2022 19:06

I always use shampoo or shower gel for hand washing when I'm on holiday.
