To expect people to know how to drive on motorways even on Sundays?

Sitting on one now, seriously annoying (I'm not driving!) why are Tesla owners sitting in the middle carriageway when there's very few cars in the left hand carriageway? 45 miles per hour is not the speed limit, it's 70! Ditto other electric cars why?

A special breed of drivers come out on Sundays.

balalake · 24/07/2022 15:54

It's not just Sundays. Middle lane hoggers should be able to be prosecuted on the basis of dash cam evidence, and have points on their licence. The general wish not to snitch or tell on others would never apply I expect.

GreenLunchBox · 24/07/2022 15:57

"even on Sundays" made me LOL 😂

HeddaGarbled · 24/07/2022 16:01

Just electric cars, hmm?

I say the same thing. Sunday drivers are the worst. My issues are usually with Volvo drivers. I try to not go out on a Sunday because of the shit drivers

sst1234 · 24/07/2022 21:14

Oh yes, they’re not called Sunday drivers for nothing. The problem is that the ‘70 is the limit, not the target’ brigade are a menace every day of the week.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 24/07/2022 21:18

I've recently come to the conclusion that petrol/diesel car owners regularly drive at 50mph on motorways because they are trying to eek out the best mpg; and electric car owners are trying to make their batteries last as along as possible.

As for sitting in the middle lane, well they used to do so too; it is now just more noticeable because of their diminished speed.

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 25/07/2022 06:58

I have spent a lot of time on the m25 over the last year and I have seen some terrible driving.

I once saw two cars slow down in the lanes next to each other, open their windows and start shouting and throwing things at each other. I kid u not. One in the middle and one in the fast lane. They nearly caused and accident.

Then u get the ‘drifters’ as I call them. Who zoom in and out of all the lanes to get passed everyone nearly causing accidents.

So many people in the middle lane doing 50 and totally oblivious to what they are doing.

so many other stories of people nearly being hit because they don’t look before they change lanes. I’m glad I don’t have to do it anymore to be honest.

Also people who slow down before every camera when they are average speed cameras. Like. How do u not know how average speed cameras work???? The clue is in the name.

cakeorwine · 25/07/2022 07:57

I could have posted this thread. Drove up the M1 yesterday. It's not difficult. So many cars hogging the middle lanes. It's frustrating if you want to get past them as you have to get into the far outside lane to get past.

SleeplessInEngland · 25/07/2022 08:00

Cruising in the middle lane when you don’t need to is actually illegal, though almost never enforced.

Perfectly fine doing 60 mph on a motorway. It's what lorries do so it makes no difference if cars do it as well.

But it's a problem if you do 60 and decide to stay in one of the other lanes doing that speed so cars struggle to get past you. Some people seem oblivious to correct lane usage.

Londonnight · 25/07/2022 08:04

It's not just middle lane drivers now, it is the one's who sit in the outside lane too, even when both insides lanes are clear. This seems to be happening more and more now. Drives me mad!

countrylifer · 25/07/2022 08:06

The M25 is awful for this. Middle laners are bad enough in a three lane carriageway but make it four and it all goes even more to pot as there's now no "middle" so everyone hogs both lanes 2 and 3 causing even more blockages

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 25/07/2022 08:20

Oh yes. Anyone driven over the Thelwall viaduct on the M6 recently? About 80% of drivers seem to lose their minds when faced with a "hill" and 4 lanes.

I can kind of understand nervous drivers not wanting to be in the inside lane because of the difficulty of getting out sometimes - partly because of the middle lane hoggers not making any progress - but really nervous drivers shouldn't be on the motorway...

Sometimes I fantasise about having one of those car-mounted matrix signs that the police sometimes have in their rear windows to tell people to pull over so I can suggest that particularly shocking drivers visit the Highway Code website Smile.

twoandcooplease · 25/07/2022 08:42

Yes it's fine for lorries to do 60. But drivers who's top speed is 60 then drop to 57/55 and even lorries are taking over by this point
It's carnage

Swizandswap · 25/07/2022 08:50

Your going to see a lot more of this as electric cars become more popular I'm afraid. The distance an electric car can travel changes significantly with your average speed and temp.

Vauxhall even have a calculator to show and to me its was a bit of an eye opener, ill stick with my hybrid for now.

Sure, lane hoggers are mildly annoying, but can't you just overtake them and crack on? That's why there are multiple lanes.

blobby10 · 25/07/2022 08:53

I drove home around the M25 and up the M1 once at 2am and there were STILL drivers hogging the middle (or lanes 2 and 3 on the 4 or 5 lane sections) when the motorway was almost deserted!

GreenWheat · 25/07/2022 08:53

The middle lane hoggers encourage frustrated motorists become outside lane hoggers, building up a queue and making it difficult to go around as there’s no more lanes! I don’t undertake but can sympathise with why people might when this happens.

I live by the M40 and even in moderate traffic this dynamic plays out.

Not if they are in the outside lane, and not if they are hovering in your blind spot while you're in the inside lane.

Ha yes , utter b'stards Wink

DangerouslyBored · 25/07/2022 09:15

The problem is that any idiot can drive on a
motorway fresh from passing their test with absolutely no experience or guidance.

I believe that drivers should have to have extra lessons and pass another test to drive on the motorway. It’s an entirely different type of driving to B and C roads and even dual carriageways. One cannot expect a new driver to know what they are doing! It’s crazy that it’s legal.

user1497787065 · 25/07/2022 09:29

It's not just Sunday drivers or middle lane hoggers. The problem with motorway drivers is that few people use them as they should using all three lanes. The middle lane should be used to overtake those in the inside lane and the outside lane used to overtake those in the middle lane. I believe that most drivers use two lanes only even when there is little traffic.

However, I'd disagree totally with that. If everyone stuck to the speed limit, everyone (most people - I guess if you can sit in the outside lane doing 100 without getting caught you will be faster) would get to their destinations faster, use less fuel, cause less pollution and there would be fewer accidents.
