To think Clarks really are the best school shoes?

Boxofbics · 24/07/2022 13:54

Have always used Clarks shoes for school but with all the prices of everything creeping up I am wondering if other school shoes are just as good?

Asda, Sainsbury's, Tesco have decent shoes for less than £20 while Clarks are close to £50.

Thoughts?
Thanks.

We have found Clarks are fine as long as we don’t go for ones that have been made for their outlet stores only, which I can now spot several years in as some designs have never been in the main stores and are rolled out each summer for the outlet. Every pair we have had of those have worn very very badly in comparison to the more expensive ones from the normal Clarks store, this year all of the top layer peeled off so was false economy.

UndertheCedartree · 24/07/2022 14:50

My DD wears trainers to school most of the time and her winter boots when it's cold. The trainers last til out grown. School shoes are a waste of money, imo, although I guess she'll have to wear them at secondary.

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 24/07/2022 14:51

Bought Clarks in Jan and 6weeks later sole fell off. Had them replaced for free and the new pair also fell apart within two months. Don't mind paying for quality but think it's awful that they can't last even a term. I don't pay £50 for my own shoes -usually £15 trainers from sports direct and they last longer than Clarks!

Thissucksmonkeynuts · 24/07/2022 14:54

Slazenger trainer have been great for us, and Sainburys Toe Zone . Both dc have narrow feet and it's a bit of a ball ache getting a good fit. Before that it was always M&S with a toe bumper but now dd is a 3 they all seem to have heels or flimsy straps and she's not keen on fugly clumpy shoes.

hulahooper2 · 24/07/2022 14:57

Clarks are nowhere near as good as they used to be , and I don’t rate there measuring service

KyaClark · 24/07/2022 14:59

The Velcro gave up on the last pair I bought for my son.

I'm going back to Kickers.

Shsios · 24/07/2022 15:03

No they aren’t. They don’t last. The geox I bought for two of my children lasted a whole school year and will last another few months still but their feet have grown so will get new pairs

Cornishmumofone · 24/07/2022 15:04

DD wears Startrite as they fit her narrow feet better than Clarks.

Upontherooftops · 24/07/2022 15:12

I find Clarks to be rubbish now. Startrite or Geox for us. M&S good too, but no choice of widths so don't always fit. DS's podiatrist always recommends Geox or Startrite.

Nap1983 · 24/07/2022 15:14

Was always Lelli Kelly for my DD when younger. They always lasted the full year. She’s now 14 and wears black trainers.

NerrSnerr · 24/07/2022 15:36

The Clark's I got for my children lasted all academic year this year just gone. My children don't grow fast though so if we were replacing two or three times due to growth we'd probably buy cheaper.

PinkiOcelot · 24/07/2022 15:39

When I was buying school shoes, quite a few years ago, I found Clarks to be just not worth the money. IME they looked old and shabby fairly soon. I found M&S and BHS (when it was still around) to be much better value for money; looking fairly new again after a bit of a polish.

OhIKnow · 24/07/2022 15:41

The only shoes I've ever found that lasted for all my 3 are Treads, they were amazing but now sadly stopped trading. Clarks, Kickers etc no better than supermarket shoes and sometimes worse...

Jenjenn · 24/07/2022 15:45

I got Ricosta last year for dd and was hugely disappointed. The shoes rubbed at the start (the shop did measure her feet) and got scuffed so quickly. My dd only wore them 3 days a week for about 4-5 months and they are fit for the bin...dd is 7 and has never worn any other shoes out so quick. 70 euro pile of shite. Might try geox this year.

FourTeaFallOut · 24/07/2022 15:46

Clarks do generally seem to last and on the one occasion that they were not as robust as usual, they replaced them without a murmur.

Next school shoes were just the pits.

Riverlee · 24/07/2022 15:47

Clarks have always lasted a year for me.

Buying cheaper isn’t always cost effective, if you have two buy lots of shoes, which can end up costing more.

Glittertwins · 24/07/2022 15:47

Clarks have just about managed the school year for DS. Had to replace DD's as the sole came away from the shoe within a week.
She's now got DMs (shoe version) as her feet have stopped growing and they were not that much more than Clarks. They're also a lot more springy in the sole so more comfortable.

unicormb · 24/07/2022 15:48

DS is allowed trainers as at special school but DD has Startrite as her first pair and will prob stick with them going forward. They're sturdy and supportive, without being too frilly or girly. I am imagine her bombing around the playground in them, and clambering on the climbing frame.

DoubleShotEspresso · 24/07/2022 15:50

I think Clark's quality versus when I went to school has gone vastly downhill. And appalling customer service In store -hello I'm here to spend a small fortune , been here 15 minutes and you can't stop gassing or make eye contact??
Sainsbury's TwoZone to me way out last Clark's and are great for still forming feet. And a fraction of the price. We bought a Clark's measure gauge snd do that at home first-far less stressful and way cheaper!

Skinterior · 24/07/2022 15:52

I've given up on school shoes. I'm biting the bullet and sticking with Doc Martens now. It's going to cost me about the same in the long run. Everything else falls apart after five minutes. It's an extra twenty quid but much tougher and way less branding. They do a pair without the yellow stitching.

Justfortherandomquestions · 24/07/2022 15:52

I'm a big fan of M&S for school shoes- always seem to get a year's wear out of them...and a bit cheaper than Clarks.

yoshiblue · 24/07/2022 15:59

I really like Clarks shoes, ds shoes worn all year are still as new, no damage at the fronts (though he doesn't pay football)

He has really skinny ankles/heels, so needs an E fit. Supermarket shoes are too wide for him.

We got to one of the outlets and pay £30 rather than £50 a pair.

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 24/07/2022 15:59

Clarks shoes only works for my daughter’s and not for my son.

Jellycatspyjamas · 24/07/2022 16:00

I’ve done Clark’s, M&S and Sainsbury’s over the years and all have looked kicked in by Christmas. This year we’ve gone for DMs - my DD will happily wear them, they seem durable and they fully cover her feet for rainy weather. Yes a bit more expensive but if I can get away with one pair rather than the usual four it’ll be more economic and more environmentally friendly.

Housewife2010 · 24/07/2022 16:01

I always found that Startrite were better than Clarks. They would last the whole school year too. ( Mysteriously my children's feet seemed to only grow in the summer holidays.)
