AIBU to refuse to buy this syrup?

Husband has returned from a US business trip with a pile of American treats for the kids.

Naturally, they are addicted, and it was all gone in days.

Kids are desperate for more, but frankly, it's crap - look at the bottle to the right, it's not even real maple syrup.

It looks like we can get this through Amazon... But, AIBU to refuse to have this rubbish in the house?

No way would I buy this crap

GeorgiaGirl52 · 24/07/2022 05:49

Another from the US who has never seen it. Maybe they sell it at the airport just for tourists?

Christinatheastonishing · 24/07/2022 05:51

Oh god that plate of food looks absolutely disgusting, I bet the kids loved it though! YADNBU refusing to buy more.

Non issue. Just say, 'Dad will bring some more next time he goes away.' (Then 'encourage' Dad to forget and bring something else, which looks less like a byproduct from a nuclear reactor!) 😁

AtomicBlondeRose · 24/07/2022 07:49

Nope, same as everyone else - it’s a junk food treat brought back as a present but now it’s gone and that’s it. No way would I be paying £££ for utter shit. I sometimes pay to buy expensive imported Italian biscuits because my DP loves them but they’re good quality and nicer than you can generally get here. I don’t pay extra for worse food!

LaurieFairyCake · 24/07/2022 07:52

Yep, buy real syrup and put a tiny amount of blue food colouring in (the same bottle)

LaurieFairyCake · 24/07/2022 07:53

Atomicblonderose

Which Italian biscuits? Grin

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 24/07/2022 07:53

On closer inspection, I'm more concerned about the 'Simulated Nuggs' 😱(made me do a little involuntary sick) How did he bring frozen food through?

byvirtue · 24/07/2022 07:54

Christ who gives that crap to their kids. Would love to see the “ingredient” list of whatever cocktail of chemicals, flavourings, colourings, perfumes, preservatives and emulsifiers has been thrown together to produce that rubbish.

Georgeskitchen · 24/07/2022 07:54

Hell no !!
A one off treat that's all

HikingforScenery · 24/07/2022 07:56

Yikes, I wouldn’t buy that no.
I’d not be happy if DH brought this home but at least it’s a souvenir from a trip so I’d not say anything, even though my children would show the effect!

There’s no way I’d ordering it off Amazon and making it a regular thing in my house. Yuck.

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 24/07/2022 07:58

Have looked up the 'nuggs' [shudder] they are veggie things. We are a veggie house, but we don't like meat 'replacement' things, these have confirmed why!

SaintHelena · 24/07/2022 08:00

Real maple syrup must be available - it is the best ever sauce on vanilla ice cream - but that!

NameChangeLifeChange · 24/07/2022 08:02

I’d leave it as a ‘lovely’🥴 treat that was a one off. I’m not the calorie or health police but just looking at those would make my kids hyper!

frazzledasarock · 24/07/2022 08:08

Why’d he buy that, there’s so much nicer kids food from America, why’d your DH pick the weirdest most colour filled fake food instead?

This! 🤢🤢

AtomicBlondeRose · 24/07/2022 08:11

@LaurieFairyCake anything from tastybiscotti.co.uk basically! Actually they’re not even that expensive, but more than I would spend on your bog standard custard creams for example.

KvotheTheBloodless · 24/07/2022 08:15

YANBU at all, it's all highly processed, addictive and without any nutritional benefit. You'd be mad to buy it!

LaurieFairyCake · 24/07/2022 08:20

Cheers 🥂 Atomicblonderose I'm always looking for a nice biscuit

DoIDareSayAnything · 24/07/2022 08:24

LOL, that is the sort of thing had (and enjoyed) either on holiday or, as here as a special thing brought home from a trip.

It isn't food really, just a bit of silliness that does no harm in that context.

midsomermurderess · 24/07/2022 08:24

You need strangers to tell you what food to buy? How did we get here? And it doesn’t even have a minor benefit of being interesting or entertaining. What has happened to so many women that they can’t do the simplest thing, choose what to eat, decide which room their children will sleep in. Strangers must decide. It’s ludicrous.

What happened to you to stop you scrolling past?

easyday · 24/07/2022 08:37

I grew up on 'maple flavoured' syrup. I wouldn't buy it now. Just tell them it's has to be bought in America so they'll have to wait til the next trip.

TheTeenageYears · 24/07/2022 08:40

Note the massive artificially flavoured notice on the blue bottle. There wouldn't have been the possibility of DC being hooked in my house, wouldn't have given it to them in the first place. The US has nothing like the rules on artificial colourings and flavourings that the UK has. Go with some actual maple syrup if they have found a taste for it but massively limit the quantity - 2 bottles gone in days is seriously worrying.
