To not plan a party for ds birthday?

Every year we have had big parties for our dcs. Ds will be 10 and says he doesn't want any sort of party this year, he'd rather have more money on gifts.

I feel a bit mean not planning something for him and his friends though and will they expect a get together to say happy birthday?

Have you asked him why he doesn't want one? Surely it's his choice

We've skipped the large parties this year and done more toward a gift and a family day out (if he's keen). It's worked well for us. DSS didn't want a large party and found it a bit overwhelming for 2h.

If that's really what he wants I'd let him choose. I'd suggest 'alternative' parties first though (eg just one friend for birthday cake and a sleepover).

We stopped large parties around that age, DD took some friends to the cinema or pizza instead.

A few friends a film (at home) something junk food like to eat (homemade or out of the freezer) and cake wouldn’t be expensive but would still celebrate his birthday.
