Ahhhh I accidentally sent a grammatically incorrect email for potential teaching job!!

Agency asked if I'd like a long-term position and whether it's okay to give details to the head. They gave my details and the headteacher emailed me last night about my experience etc.
I got a bit overexcited at the prospect of a long-term role and sent an email in a haste.

Think of using "During university, Literacy was my specialism but I do enjoy teaching Maths and Art".
"However, supply has helped me become more experienced and develop confidence in the different areas of learning as, when I was a day-to-day supply, I often had to teach the lessons which were there on the day."

Of course there was to it but I am cringing at my email!! I am very experienced and my email just makes me sound "bleh". I am hoping my agency can still vouch for me as that email does not represent me at all.

I can't see the error in that? 😆

I've seen much worse applications from teachers and if they're using an agency, they've already reached a point where they can't be too choosy. I'm sure it will be fine.

Somethingsnappy · 23/07/2022 17:04

The use of capitals you mean? It's not so awful really.

bbqhulahoop · 23/07/2022 17:04

I've never had a school report without at least one grammatical error in it... I reckon you'll be fine!

And that's not meant as a teacher bashing comment, more to say that they don't have the monopoly on perfect SPaG

Nooooooo · 23/07/2022 17:05

Maybe I'm just overthinking it. I just think it makes me sound naff! I'm just awful at writing emails!

Or the time to proof read probably too! 😄

I just think I could have come up with something better if I didn't get caught up in the excitement of a long-term

OP, when DD was 5 years old, she used to correct her reception teacher’s spelling. That woman obviously landed the job regardless! Don’t despair.

Hopefully you'll get the job, and have the chance to prove yourself!

Discovereads · 23/07/2022 17:08

So long as you answered the Heads questions, I think you will be ok.

Nooooooo · 23/07/2022 17:10

I have had a long-term the past year teaching year 1 but I haven't found anything for September yet, despite applying for jobs, but Chester/Liverpool area is so competitive, so I am dreading the prospect of back to day-to-day if nothing comes of this :(

What bit did you think was grammatically incorrect? There's a lot more flexibility in grammar than the government likes us to think!

SteveHarringtonsChestHair · 23/07/2022 17:13

Think you need to slow down and proof read before posting or emailing Grin

You'll be fine. I work in a school and I’ve seen some awful letters and emails sent out to parents by teachers - think using the wrong ‘there/their’, misspelling common words like ‘stationery’ or totally missing out words.

Teachers are human too, and while we’d hope their grammar and attention to detail were exemplary, that isn’t always the case.

SundayTeatime · 23/07/2022 17:13

I think that’s OK. I was expecting much worse from your thread title.

Aprilx · 23/07/2022 17:15

I don’t know what grammatical error you mean, do you mean the capital letters on literacy, maths and art? Other than I don’t see errors per se, but more the syntax could be better and therefore it is unfortunate that you mention you like literacy best! But what is done is done, no point worrying about it as you can’t change it.

girlmom21 · 23/07/2022 17:17

It's the whole second sentence that's the issue, isn't it? It just feels like there are lots of words that say very little.

SweetSakura · 23/07/2022 17:17

I get countless emails and letters from school containing basicak grammatical errors. I wouldn't worry.
But yes, in future for things like job applications you should always get someone else to proof read them.

SweetSakura · 23/07/2022 17:18

*basic.

Sorry, stupid phone (proves my point though!)

Immaterialatthispoint · 23/07/2022 17:21

I am assuming the error is starting a sentence with “however”, along with the capitalisation.

Since so few people use “however” correctly, I don’t imagine you’ll be pulled up on it.

Nooooooo · 23/07/2022 17:23

Yes it's the second part that's making me cringe - the bit about day-to-day supply. Oh well, whatever will be will be. Agency said it could take a few weeks to hear but tbh I'm not expecting to get it after that email

OP posts:
BlueMumDays · 23/07/2022 17:23

It would have looked really bad if you'd used a wrong their/there (even though it's very easily done when typing quickly!) But i wouldn't worry about anything else.

Presumably they have a copy of your CV, which has a more well-honed personal statement?

custardbear · 23/07/2022 17:23

Did it go to the agency first? They often edit I think .. well they used to when I was telling (25 years ago lol)

Nooooooo · 23/07/2022 17:26

No it was an email straight to the head - Ahh I'm so disappointed in myself!
I've never heard of 'however' not being allowed at the start of a sentence? In university, we had a list of sentence starters for contrasting and "However" was one of them

OP posts:
SundayTeatime · 23/07/2022 17:30

It’s fine to use “however” at the start of a sentence. Where people go wrong with “however” is assuming it means the same as “but” and using it in the middle of a sentence.

The stuff about supply is a bit awkward - I did wonder if you’d missed a word out - but it’s OK, if not exactly elegant. You’ll be fine.

Pumperthepumper · 23/07/2022 17:30

I don’t think it’s too bad but a good rule of thumb is to remove as many words as possible from a sentence when you proof read.

Malbecfan · 23/07/2022 17:33

OP, compared to the prospective HT letters I have had the misfortune to read, yours is fine. Only 2 of them had no typos or grammar errors. One even got the name of the school wrong. Don't worry!
