To ask how to make money fast?

silverie · 23/07/2022 11:18

I am a lone parent to DS aged 3. We live in a 2 bed housing association property and have done for two years.

I am in debt, I'm scared to even look at my credit score. I can no longer afford everything.

I am a student and it requires me to work full time placement blocks so I can't get a normal job.

I'm only entitled to £100 UC a month due to my student finance.

HOW can I make money quickly? I haven't paid any bills or rent for over two months now.

I have genuinely considered exotic dancing.

Please help me.

I think you will have to get a job
Doesnt sound like you can afford to be a student unfortunately

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 23/07/2022 11:24

Speak to your HA about your situation they may have someone who can make sure you are receiving what you are entitled to. Talk to Citizens Advice, Stepchange or Christians against Poverty about your debts - they can help.
Go on Money Saving Expert forum - Debt Free Wannabees and get lots of practical and supportive advice on your situation. There are also boost your income ideas on the MSE forum and I think in Money Matters on this site.

Simple question - why haven't you paid rent or bills for the last 2 months?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 23/07/2022 11:24

Also check if your Uni has any hardship funds

JudithHarper · 23/07/2022 11:27

For a start, I would stop paying any unsecured debt eg credit cards and get your rent up to date. You don't want to lose a secure tenancy.

Won't make much but maybe do online surveys in your spare time. Or become a mystery shopper.

I don't know what you mean by 'exotic dancing' but if it is all hands-off, maybe, maybe not.

  • How close are you to finishing your studies? The reality is that if you don’t have enough money to live you might have to see if you can defer for a while and get a job to bring some money in.
  • if you are nearly finished and it is an area where you will find it easy to get a job is there anyone who could give you a short term loan?
  • Are you absolutely sure you are getting every benefit you are entitled to? Citizens Advice can do a benefit check for you.
  • Do you own anything you can sell?
  • do you have any kind of skill you could use to make money from a home based industry?
MagneticRubberDucks · 23/07/2022 11:29

There is no way to make money quickly without working.

do you not get the maintenance part of your student loan?

are you not on the summer break now? Surly you can get a job until term starts?

so you have childcare? Evening jobs in supermarkets or in the hospitality industry are probably your easiest route to earning money.

Isaidnoalready · 23/07/2022 11:31

Discretionary housing fund to help you with your rent?

Check your universal credit award is correct they are bloody awful at awards with burserys if you have a child they shouldn't be taking it all off you (if I remember correctly) join universal credit essentials on Facebook they will help you go through it all

Make sure your claiming everything you possibly can

Yes obviously get a job too

Negotiate with the lesser debts a lower repayment plan so you can catch up with your priority debts

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 23/07/2022 11:31

You haven't mentioned child benefit or maintenance are you getting either of those?

silverie · 23/07/2022 11:35

I only get a week of for summer.

I have looked at applying for bank/flexible jobs but there are none in my area.

I agree with @JudithHarper about prioritising your rent. Over 2 months puts you in danger of an eviction notice for non-payment of rent. You need to prioritise getting the arrears down a bit (under 2 months is key). (Don't panic - the eviction process is slow at the best of times and usually social housing providers do try to work with you to find a solution)
Are you on a HA starter tenancy or do you have an assured tenancy?

Eggcitement · 23/07/2022 11:45

Go to student services at your uni and tell them everything. They will support you as much as they can and signpost your to other resources.

Recyclingbins · 23/07/2022 11:56

What’s your study in? How long is this likely to go on for? When can you finish your course & get a job? This is all important as then people can advise better - e.g if this situation is lasting til September, you can probably middle through but if it’s much longer you may need to rethink the study.

Sloth66 · 23/07/2022 12:07

Contact the council, explain the situation and prioritise the housing debt.
contact CAB to explore income maximisation and check you’re claiming all you can.
talk to your college and see if they have any extra grants available.

chesirecat99 · 23/07/2022 12:22

Can you say what course it is? There may be help available that is specific to your profession.

If it is eligible for the NHS bursary, there are hardship funds if your expenses exceed your income.

Have you claimed all the allowances you are eligible for eg childcare?

Your university should have hardship grants and loans. If it is your summer break, you might be eligible for a grant/loan from the 21/22 academic year, then again in a few weeks for another grant/loan for the 22/23 academic year (usually there is a maximum amount per academic year).

Have you maxed out your student overdraft? Some accounts offer up to £3k interest free. You will have to pay it off and it will start accruing interest after graduation but presumably you will be working then.

Is there any work you can do that is related to your course? You may find you earn more in a skilled job. Think laterally, eg if your course is nursing, consider things like care work, phlebotomy, child care etc.

Search out the £10 a day threads on MN. They won't help you earn a lot of money quickly but they could help you keep your head above water while you finish your course.

BalloonsAndWhistles · 23/07/2022 12:28

Speak to your credit card companies and tell them firmly that you can’t pay. I got my mum’s completely written off due to this. If you’re prepared to accept a mark on your file for 6 years then consider that. If no, insist you can only afford £1 a month. They will do this.

AWonderfulNewName · 23/07/2022 16:28

Look into matched betting.

SunnyDayToday1 · 23/07/2022 16:32

How about getting a job in a call centre working from home? A lot of them are shifts you can do evenings or weekends. Look into it.

Unwavering721 · 23/07/2022 16:39

Don’t bury your head in the sand, it will make things worse. Battle it head on. Accept the fact you are in debt, make a plan to tackle it. Make a spreadsheet of all your essential outgoings, and budget for future months.

can you babysit in the evenings? Bubble app is super flexible, you can pick days/eves you are available. Could you sign up to be a supply teaching assistant on your days off? Again, very flexible, pays about £100 a day and works with school hours/term time etc.

LampLighter414 · 23/07/2022 16:51

Only fans. Promote it on a new twitter/instagram with faceless shots of you in undies etc

ilovesooty · 23/07/2022 16:56

Talk to Stepchange or similar and prioritise your rent arrears and council tax as they're priority debts.

SavingsThreads · 23/07/2022 17:02

Somethings off with your benefits - have you checked? With. 3yo and only a student loan as income, you should get more like £400 a month at least. Plus no council tax to pay as you're a student.

HelenHywater · 23/07/2022 17:04

check your benefits as they seem off to me. phone Gingerbread or similar who can do a benefits check for you.

And yes - maintenance - if you haven't, can you go to the CMS for maintenance from your child's other parent?

TyneTeas · 23/07/2022 17:11

£10 a day thread may help a bit www.mumsnet.com/talk/legal_money_matters/4580588-earn-ps10-a-day-how-is-it-july-already

Ontomatopea · 23/07/2022 17:13
