Have been working in a summer school, posted here a couple of times for advice.
Expected to lose 25 minutes of my unpaid lunch break most days (on good days I only lost 15) because of late parents.
I started asking if someone would be able to take over so I could get my lunch- that was dependent on the availability of a staff member.
Kids aged between 3 and 10 all in one room for 3 hours, no playground to run around in, thus getting frustrated.
Kids running out the door to see if their parents were here, had to keep bringing them back in and getting told off by management.
They've had 4 teachers in total and each has said the same thing.
Hourly paid, with my unpaid prep time and loss of lunch break I worked out I was actually getting £9.75 an hour.
I was placed into an older class with children aged between 9 and 15, some parents complained so I had the class taken off me but honestly so relieved.
Anyway I'll be gone very soon. I've been lucky to have been offered a new and better paid opportunity in an all boys faith high school. I haven't worked in this kind of setting before, it will bring its own challenges of course but I'm excited for the opportunity.
I would appreciate any classroom management advice, I know I'll need to make my expectations clear from the beginning, be consistent and have a strong presence. I've got until September to prepare but I just want to make a good impression! I'm also an NQT, would just appreciate any advice, especially people who've worked in an all male school.
