I may be being somewhat neurotic here, but bare with me. We live in a Victorian terrace, noticed today the Ndn has put a huge mirror on their bedroom chimney breast (blinds and windows all open, not spying!) but it faces directly into the sun for most of the day and will bounce the light / heat out.

Am I right to be concerned or would you just ignore it?

Are you being serious?

Is this the sort of thing you mean you're worried about?

Yea I'm being serious and yes that's what I'm worried about. Seems a bit erm, nonsensical to point a mirror into the sun.

There are loads of other news stories about houses burning down because of mirrors/ornaments etc, yes I'd be concerned too if I was living next door!

Are you anxiety prone OP? You can manage risks in your own home but not your neighbours - stop looking in widows, if you are on "high alert" at the moment. Just don't allow yourself.

I once had a magnifying makeup mirror, the kind on a stand, which reflected and concentrated the sun's rays and actually melted a hairbrush on my dressing table! I have been very careful with it ever since and always put it in a drawer after use.

So yes, I would take this seriously. Hard to warn your neighbour without looking nosey though (and I know mine would think I was being ridiculous).

Ontomatopea · 22/07/2022 22:32

I think its magnifying mirrors mostly isn't it? Or I'd it all mirrors?

Not anxious, not on high alert, just seems a bit dub. We're in a terrace I look in their window walking down from the washing line.

It seems to be magnifying mirrors that are the issue.

We had a near miss with a magnifying glass that was used in model making, left on a desk in a west facing window. It melted the Airfix model and scorched the wooden desk top. We were lucky that the desk wasn't covered with a sheet of newspaper, as that would surely have ignited.
