Worried about emergency tax

Prettybubblesintheair · 22/07/2022 19:11

Sorry not really an Aibu but posting for traffic.

Started first new job since 2017. Have been receiving income related esa. No p45 but the amount I’m earning is less than the ni and fav bands, I’m working 24hrs a week and earning £912 a month but I started on 11th of July so only earned £532 this month. I’ve stopped receiving my esa now due to working and I’m terrified I might be emergency taxed and I desperately need the money after losing the esa! I think I filled out a starter checklist at my induction but not sure so have done one and emailed to my employer. Does anyone know the likelihood of me being emergency taxed please?

Give HMRC a call?

WorstBJever · 22/07/2022 19:16

TBH it is common to be emergency taxed when starting a new job. It happened to me last year when I changed jobs, however I rang HMRC and spoke to a very helpful lady who sorted everything for me there and then. So yes, as pp said ring them and speak to someone.

Alice909 · 22/07/2022 19:20

Ring HMRC, they are really helpful - I’ve been on BR tax code in my new job for 3 months, I called them and sorted it straight away and should get the tax back in this months pay

I started a new job in Feb but got an emergency tax code in May. I’ve had notification it has gone back to normal for June and now DH has gone onto emergency tax despite working somehwere for years. I have concluded there is no rhyme or reason!

EV117 · 22/07/2022 19:42

I’ve been emergency taxed for literally every new job - just give HMRC a ring. I’m ashamed to say this but once I didn’t notice for months! I don’t know how. I got a big pay back.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/07/2022 19:59

Your pay is below the annual tax allowance so they might not tax you at all, so may be nothing to worry about Smile

Your employer should have given you a P46, and if you ticked the correct box - "my first job this year" then you won't be taxed.

If you didn't tick any box at all then you will be on emergency tax but most employers would give you the form back to do properly as it's not valid without a tick in a box

As the payroll dept, they can tell you

*ask the payroll dept

I'm on emergency tax atm due to an HR balls up at my last job. Honestly, it is best to call HMRC, they're really helpful.

Rumblebear · 23/07/2022 06:42

Echo everyone - call HMRC, I did this a few weeks ago, spent a while on hold but they corrected it within 5 mins and I'll get the tax back this pay day. Even if you sent in a new starter form, things can sometimes go wrong and it's always your responsibility to check your tax code is appropriate

DashboardConfessional · 23/07/2022 06:46

You should be able to log in to your tax profile - you can enter your projected earnings and see what tax code you are on.

This is the same as the new starter checklist OP has already filled out.

Honestly, calling HMRC may well sort it, but there should be no need to. I’ve changed jobs frequently in the past few years, always filled in a P46/provided a P45 quickly upon starting and never been emergency taxed. Also never made a single phone call to HMRC.
