to ask for help in finding a job?

I've just been listening to PM on R4, all about how hard it is to find staff for care homes and similar-level jobs. I've been finding it hard to hear because I have spent the past twelve months applying for numerous jobs and receiving rejection after rejection after rejection. Is there anyone out there who might be struggling to recruit who might be interested in me?

The job needs to be part-time and WFH/hybrid due to disability - beyond that, though, I would do virtually anything which pays minimum wage or above. However I have 20+ years of experience of various forms of remote working, and a range of academic qualifications including a PhD.

Can anyone help?

What skills do you have?
What did you study for your degree and PhD?
What do you enjoy doing?
Do you have computer skills - Teams, Word, Excel etc

Most/all universities now have admin roles that are hybrid working for non-student facing roles?

maddening · 22/07/2022 17:47

Where are you based? Can you give an idea of prev roles and qualifications that would help people help you.

My place is hiring all over the shop and are hybrid but obviously what your experience is and location will help.

"Most/all universities now have admin roles that are hybrid working for non-student facing roles?"

This year alone I have applied for about ten such roles, and been rejected from each. There's always a better qualified candidate.

The 'similar level' jobs are all that kind of position though - you don't want to be a care worker or similar so I'm not sure why you're equating that comment with your experience wanting a WFH type role. Those are harder to obtain, especially part time immediately.

North. Previous roles have been management, policy, teaching/lecturing - but I'd settle for anything at a lower grade, did lots of admin work as a student. Fully IT literate. @maddening Any relevance?

It's a disability and health issue, not a lifestyle preference. What I meant was, I don't mind entry-level admin or data entry provide they pay min wage.

Have you looked at your CV? I mean really looked at it and tweak it to fit the job you are applying for?
I know this is bad but putting your phd qualification on your CV to a minimum wage paying job is maybe putting employers off?

RandomMess · 22/07/2022 18:06

Urgh don't stop applying for the uni jobs. At our place they are getting nowhere near the applicants they used to. Sometimes they advertise them with their formal long winded job titles and I honestly don't know who would know what the job is from the title!!

Ylvamoon · 22/07/2022 18:07

Are you "tailoring" your applications to fit the job description?
Nobody will empoly a PhD graduate in an entry level position unless you can convince them otherwise. Many empyers see you as overqualified and think you'll f* off sooner rather than later.

On top of this, you are looking for work from home & PT, I think you are completing with a lot of people that have the same idea.

Try the NHS, not sure if it's possible for you but, I was offered a permanent position after doing some work as bank staff not nursing but an admin role. I do 3 days from home & 2 at the office.

RandomMess · 22/07/2022 18:10

Have tried to send you a PM not sure if it has worked though.

Eunorition · 22/07/2022 18:13

Remove the PHD. I only have a degree and couldn't get interviews at corner shops, Costa, Primark etc. I ended up retraining. They won't touch your CV if it looks like you'll leave for better.

Also people are dicks, and you should avoid mentioning the disability. It's illegal but it doesn't stop them putting it straight in the bin.

Bubblebubblebah · 22/07/2022 18:24

Monzo bank if you don't min customer service.
Drop the phd off the cv for this one

fyn · 22/07/2022 18:37

Some smaller Parish Clerk jobs would probably work well, mine is from home with one or two evening meetings a month but they are seated for a few hours. Otherwise I arrange my 24 hours a week as I like. You can get very small parish’s that are 20 hours over a month as and when.

fyn · 22/07/2022 18:39

To add, I am hugely over qualified for the role of Parish Clerk but they are happy with the extra knowledge they get for £14 an hour. My last job paid double.

BIWI · 22/07/2022 18:39

What are the reasons being given for rejections?

Heroicallyl0st · 22/07/2022 18:42

What about financial services? Lots of problems recruiting and retaining talent at the moment. You’d find it a doddle, minimum pay but good benefits and WFH

KellyTheElephant · 22/07/2022 18:51

Sounds perfect. Where are those kinds of job advertised?

Private tutoring from home?

KellyTheElephant · 22/07/2022 18:55

"What are the reasons being given for rejections?"

Almost always the same reason, almost always. Basically, my autism makes me very bad at interviews. But then, if I tell them in advance that I'm autistic and need help, they'll invariably find a reason not to interview me.

"Private tutoring from home?"

That's an interesting thought. How would I get into that?

fyn · 22/07/2022 19:01

The smaller parish’s seem to advertise locally or on indeed - like this uk.indeed.com/m/viewjob?jk=eb73455c95f208c4&from=mobhp_jobfeed&tk=1g8jgu3bri98u801 or this. The SLCC website has jobs too but they are usually head of town councils paying £60,000 upwards and require a qualification.

maddening · 22/07/2022 19:07

Are you near Manchester?

RandomMess · 22/07/2022 19:10

But if you declare your disability (autism) decent employers would interview under the disability interview guaranteed scheme.

Reasonable adjustments can be requested such as no ice breaker questions etc

RandomMess · 22/07/2022 19:11

A lot of low grade finance roles need an eye for detail and are very structured so would be a breeze for you.
