Help- stomach bug!

Trendytrousers · 22/07/2022 17:09

I appear to have got some kind of stomach bug as I’ve been shitting brown rain for over 24 hours now

At first I let it run it’s course and didn’t stop it, tried to stay hydrated but took no drugs.

But today I have to drive 3 hours to a relatives house for a festival tomorrow. I took Imodium at 6am this morning and have followed dosage and took 3 more since (it says to take one every time you shit basically) and it’s not stopped. Lessened in frequency but the cramps are next level.

I think it’s something I ate (dodgy egg) but does anyone have any advice to try and help and reset my stomach and STOP ME SHITTING so I can actually go about my weekend plans?

Urm - you have a stomach bug and you're going to visit a friend. Nice! Sorry, but you should keep away from others for 48 hours after last symptoms.

A festival on a hot day when you have the trots sounds like a recipe for misery and dehydration too. Call it off and let yourself recover.

mrsfoof · 22/07/2022 17:19

Also, the diarrhoea is your body's way of getting rid of the infection. It's not a good idea to use meds to try and stop it.

ShowOfHands · 22/07/2022 17:20

I'm going to a festival next week. Wouldn't be impressed to learn that somebody with an active stomach bug had decided to come and spread it round the site.

Stay at home.

comealongponds · 22/07/2022 17:40

YABVU

stay home, cancel your plans, don’t bother with the Imodium, let your body get rid of whatever it is

Absolutely do not risk spreading a stomach bug at a festival, ffs how selfish can you get?!

Stay at home. Unbelievable

UncomfortableSilence · 22/07/2022 17:59

What you do is stay at home and don't selfishly go about spreading your bug.

Even if it's food related, the idea of standing in a field with no easy access to toilets while you've got diarrhoea is obviously ridiculous Confused

ScarlettSunset · 22/07/2022 18:00

You should definitely stay home.
I've got a stomach bug today too so I've cancelled all my plans for this weekend. I think mine is probably something I ate too but it's not fair to inflict it on anyone else if it isn't.

godmum56 · 22/07/2022 18:02

Do not go....sad disappointing all the other stuff but do not go. Its much more likely to be norovirus than a dodgy egg, it can spread like wildfire. You everyone and yourself a favour and stay home.

ladydimitrescu · 22/07/2022 18:08

Stay home ffs!

Ameliarosethistle · 22/07/2022 18:11

Definitely stay at home.

All stomach bugs are highly contagious and so are most forms of food poisoning so for example ecoli and salmonella can be spread from person to person contact without the second person eating any affected food.

Ameliarosethistle · 22/07/2022 18:15

Oh just to add because it's been mentioned that diarrhoea isn't actually your body's way of getting rid of the virus, it is the virus's symptom to allow it to spread, in the same way that sneeze contains viral droplets to allow a cold to spread. The virus hijacks the body's natural methods of elimination!

It could be covid. Some people get diarrhea as the only symptom. Google it.

Trendytrousers · 22/07/2022 21:24

Not COVID, had to test for work this week

I would be incredibly surprised if it was Norovirus because I WFH and genuinely haven’t left my flat due to work in last week.

I’m almost certain it’s dodgy food I’ve eaten, but I’ve not been sick.

Plans are cancelled now because I feel now so unwell that even Imodium isn’t helping and I can’t keep even water in.

Appreciate I was grasping at straws to try and find a way to enjoy a weekend I’d had planned for ages

Could be worth getting checked for campylobacter. It’s a horrible bug, and causing mainly very bad diarrhea (as opposed to being sick). It can take about 7 days from infection to symptoms, so not always obvious what food has been the cause. When DH had it, we narrowed it down to a chicken liver pate in a restaurant , but it was 7 days before the symptoms started and he was very ill for over 2.5 weeks. It’s a notifiable disease as well so public health get involved. I hope you feel better soon OP, but agree with others that the weekend plans may need to be put on hold!

gingergiraffe · 22/07/2022 23:09

Dh and I had a nasty diarrhoea bug a few weeks ago. It must have been a nasty one as I am never ill. Mine lasted a couple of days, Dh’s nearly a week before he felt ok. There are lots of these bugs around it seems. Seriously, foolish and morally not a good idea to go to a festival when you obviously have something that will be passed onto others. Surely you would prefer anyway to be near your own toilet and own bed, bearing in mind the tummy cramps?

gingergiraffe · 22/07/2022 23:13

Sorry. I see you have cancelled. Would strongly suspect a bug rather than food poisoning though. We didn’t suffer any vomiting either. Suspect adult dd may have had it the previous week as she felt grotty for a few days (had been working in a school) but didn’t have the diarrhoea as she suffers chronic constipation!

noro is a bugger. Because its droplet spread, you can catch if off mail or food packaging if someone with poor hygiene has handled it. That's why it sweeps through places like hospitals. I used to get it around once a year as did most of my colleagues because we worked across several hospital bases. It doesn't always cause vomitting. www.nhs.uk/conditions/norovirus/
