To call the RSPCA?

There are two lovely cats who live on my street. Their owners moved away some years ago and didn't take them with them, which is really sad.

Up until lately, our elderly neighbour has been feeding one of them, not sure about the other one. Recently, the one she feeds has been crying at her door really loudly for a long time, but the elderly lady seems to have forgotten about her (she has dementia). She doesn't let her in the house like she used to, and often they come into my house whenever the door is open (usually wet) presumably for some shelter.

I'm highly allergic but can't resist giving them some water at least, but it can't continue. Should I call the RSPCA? Or is it not my business? The neighbours daughter knows the situation but doesn't seem to care (can't blame her, she has a lot on her plate).

What ever you do, don't refer to it as the cat protection league. I got a right telling off for that. And they didn't help either!

@Yarnasaurus darling Len!

I’d ask the neighbours, if there was no interest then I’d consider putting out food, water and providing shelter until I spoke to cats protection.

They won't do anything. Could you put some form of shelter in your garden for them. Even a wooden box And food every day

Of course the RSPCA will do something! They'll collect the cats and take them to their local shelter or foster care, with a view to getting them adopted.

They won't. They are really not very good atall. I wouldn't believe all the tv adverts you see. When your call them they do t want to know

Another vote here from a cat lover — definitely definitely please please call a local rescue & not the RSPCA/ Cats Protection —— a kindly volunteer will come & scan cats & very hopefully take cats to be adopted they sound so lovely and adoptable. Please don’t leave it as neighbour is clearly too unwell to look after them properly.

The thread a PP linked to really shows how important it is. That cat ended up having the best two months of his life being loved and fed roast chicken rather than dying alone by bins because an idiotic neighbour thought that was ok if they shoved a bit of food at him.

And yea please feed cat before rescue can come I bet cat is hungry x

Local rescue would be a more sympathetic bet. Likely to be able to scan for a chip and help re-home them if the owners can't be traced (or don't care)

I wouldnt even bother with the RSPCA. I tried contacting them 15 years ago about a cat who had been dumoed. Was sent a paper collar and a factsheet about strays.
I still own this cat which has cost me thousands in vets bills but wouldnt change that for the world.

The best option I think would be a local animal charity. Have a quick google search as there will be alot near you.
I would just drop them off to be honest and then you know theyre safe.
If they are microchipped they are still the property of the previous owner.... may be worth popping them into a vet to check because it is actually the owners responsibility to rehome them or whatever.
