For not paying full invoice

We've had bathroom fitters in to replace out main bathroom and en suite. For background they told us it would take 2-3 weeks and we are on week 10 now. Part of the reason it has taken SO long is that they have had to redo work that they've done a rubbish job at - e.g. regrout where the grout has been crumbling after a couple of days, or has gaps in, replacing trim on the tiles because when they sanded the walls they scratched the trim with the sander, resealing stuff that hadn't been properly sealed, etc.

I've given up trying to get a good finish on the work, and have been left with gaps in the group, seal done super messily all over my (relatively expensive) tiles, etc. WE will definitely need someone to come in and redo some of the sealing as it just looks awful, but I can't bear to have them back anymore as they seem to fix one thing then screw up another.

Anyway, to the AIBU. We have two invoices left to pay. One for the origianl quote and one for additional work to create two recesses as well as move the pipes we assumed were at the back of the ensuite into the main bathroom and box it in. They did the recesseses but it turned out the pipes were already where they needed to be and no building in is required. I think if we had had a good experience I would just have sucked it up and paid it, given how long they've spent on it. But I feel resentful paying for work we didn't receive given that the work we are paying for it so crap, so offered them about 60% of this final invoice (for the recesseses). AIBU saying I won't pay the full amount on that invoice?

So they've invoiced for work they didn't need to do? Yanbu not to pay it.

I would be tempted to get quotes for fixing their mistakes then minus that from the total invoice. You shouldn't have to pay to fix their mistakes.

Tontostitis · 21/07/2022 16:20

60% is too low I'd pay 90% but you'd be the rip off merchants if you pay 60%

And while they are there they can check the quality of the job.

@Tontostitis I would be a rip off merchant for offering to pay 60% of the quote for work they have only done about 30% of (two small recesses vs the two small recesses and a big boxing in and moving location of pipes)?

I will pay for the rest of their work. I can't be bothered to argue. I hope someone can come in and fix the remaining things for the 40% I am not paying off that particular bit of work.

I'd get quotes for making good from two or three other fitters. Then, take the middle quote and minus that cost from the remaining invoice. Send them an invoice if the amount is greater than what is left to be paid.

Would you have been happy to pay more if the pipes had been more and not less complicated than the fixed price they had quoted for?

It sounds like you have had an awful experience with them though. I wouldn't pay for the sub standard elements of their work though.

So many thoughs 🙄
