Deborah James's Funeral - annoyed with the press ...

... for not keeping this as a family funeral and writing rubbish like "Lorraine Kelly leads the stars" (that phrase does my absolute head in), photo opportunities of Tom Fletcher and his wife, Gaby Roslin and others. Not that I am blaming these "celebs", rather the press. I also saw her referred to as "the star" in the same way that the horrid Daily Mail write about Kerry Katona and such like - "However, the star revealed in early May she had stopped active treatment and was receiving end of life care at her parents’ home in Woking."

What a shame Dame Deborah James died wrong.

I'm sure it would have been soo much better for her children to have lost their mother in a way that is acceptable to others.

From Hunter S Thompson
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!

That is certainly not what I was saying. I was talking about the funeral and the fact it was reported as a celebrity event when it was a private family event. If people are criticising Deborah herself, I am definitely not one of them.

Though I am fed up of being barraged with death and illness on a daily basis, that's not what I said in my OP (presuming you're talking to me). I objected to the way it was made about the people attending the funeral, Lorraine Kelly "leading the stars" - barf - and making it a celebrity circus.

The barrage of press is a campaign to raise awareness of bowel cancer - the fact you’re now here posting about it shows how successful that campaign has been.

A good friend of mine confided last week that she’d seen her GP after realising some symptoms she’s had could potentially be bowel cancer having read an article about Deborah James - if the campaign gets people talking and acting it can only be positive imo, even if it’s because they see a picture of Lorraine Kelly!

Well said @birdfeeders. Walk a mile in her shoes, then judge if you must. Nothing to do with anyone else how she lived her final days.

It was a private family event so therefore nothing to do with you. The family invited Lorraine Kelly probably because she gave so much air time to the Bowel Babe cause and maybe just maybe Deborah and Lorraine did become friends. I'm Scottish and we have a much less squeamish view on death and funerals. So what if the press focussed on well known faces.

I imagine her children are very proud of their Mum for being so brave, and for turning what was a tragedy into something very positive - i.e. raising awareness. Everyone deals with death differently, and to me she was admirable. I'm not sure I'd have the fortitude myself.

I really don't understand why everyone is piling on the OP? The post was about the language used by the Daily Mail? 'Leads the stars.....' in the same way the paper loves to use the words 'flaunt her curves' 'showcases her assets' all utter drivel.

The OP isn't saying anywhere in her post that she thought Deborah James was wrong or anything like that. It was completely about press reporting. It does baffle me how easy it is to immediately jump on people before properly reading or digesting the post.

Some of the comments afterwards however.........

@TalkSomeSense1 And the post by @LyingWitchInTheWardrobe who think they know me and people like me. When they don't know me they can't know people like me. And the juvenile name calling. Totally spiteful and childish. I often think I'm in the zoo when I'm on Mumsnet. This ridiculous poster doesn't know me from Eve. 😹😹

It's the way they report it. Leading the stars. Reporting on outfits as they would for a film premiere.

You posted the thread. What's difficult to understand about that?

It's up to you if you follow tabloid stories. You're certainly not on your own. But to do that and then complain about the tabloids in a dedicated thread. Why not just inwardly shudder, ignore - and don't feed the gutter press. Or do - and accept that you do.

No, I don't know you. Do you know the person's family? What they wanted from all this circus? If you don't then I really don't understand your criticism.
