To wonder if disposable BBQs should be banned?

They seem to encourage irresponsible behavior, waste and littering.
I am sure a few determined people will try to put their own kits together, but I do think not having disposable ones readily available would certainly put off the majority of people who use them.

I know that "not everyone has a garden where they can do a BBQ." Thing is, though, that's actually meI live in a flat with no garden. In the country where I live, it's accepted that if you want to BBQ and don't have a garden or rooftop, you book at a leisure spot or public facility that has BBQ equipment already set up. This will be a designated area that is safe for BBQing, and there is plenty of water on tap and next to no fire risk. We have hot summers here, and certainly are very rarely getting any kind of BBQ-caused mass firesat any rate, I never heard of any.

Does the UK not have bookable BBQ facilities in BBQ-safe leisure areas?

Yep, completely agree. There are signs posted around every 100m where we live, clearly stating in various languages no BBQs. People ignore them.

I’ve never seen a hire a bbq or book a bbq -

Seems like a good idea!

Lockheart · 21/07/2022 00:18

We should be moving away from disposable culture across the board. And disposable BBQs are not only wasteful, they are a fire hazard.

SirenSays · 21/07/2022 00:21

Public bbqs are common in other countries, I don't know why they're so rare here. I'd absolutely prefer them over the disposables.

RetrainRetrain · 21/07/2022 00:23

There are bookable BBQs near us and you can also buy a portable one for under £20 so there's no need for throwaway models.

maddening · 21/07/2022 00:25

Not bookable but a beach car park I have been to had bbq areas, you just needed to add charcoal.

MarmiteCoriander · 21/07/2022 00:26

I've never seen a 'BBQ hire' facility in the UK.

In other countries, there are public BBQ's permanently set up in parks. Either free, you press the button and it comes on for an hour or so, until you press the button again OR, they accept coins/card payments for the allotted time.

You take your own silicone sheets or non stick paper to cook on- to avoid cooking on a communal hot plate.

This is a typical example of the kind of thing I'm talking about (it's in Japanese but you can just scroll and see the pictures). This is an urban park reachable by train or car easily. You can also go to places further out in the countryside.

You can bring your own food if you have a car, or order sets of food if you don't want to drag food around with you.

At our local loch the picnic tables are designed for disposable bbqs. Raised metal plate at one end that says bbq. People use those rather than ruining the grass or setting them up on the beach. You can't book you just turn up but I go a fair bit and it's easy enough to get a table. Same tables have been there for years and no one has managed to set them on fire yet. Always thought it was a sensible idea.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/07/2022 00:28

There are some BBQ setups near us, afaik they're first come first served.

Tend to agree re disposable bbqs. They're not necessary, and even without the risk of starting fires and littering they're often used with no consideration for the wind direction and whether their smoke is going to blow over other people on beaches or in parks. Just take a good picnic fgs, no need for burnt offerings to the gods.

user1477391263 · 21/07/2022 00:28

(some have tables and equipment much further apart so you can have more privacy)

They are very good and make it possible to have pretty strict rules about not BBQing randomly in non-fire-safe zones, whlie also being fair to people who live in flats who will never be able to BBQ at home.

Should disposable (insert unnecessary consumer item here) be banned?

Yes.

maddening · 21/07/2022 00:30

.
Newborough beach has purpose built bbq areas and so does Thurstaston I think

XenoBitch · 21/07/2022 00:33

There are several parks in my town that have bookable BBQs

On the rare occasion I have a BBQ at home, I always buy a disposable one. I don't have them regularly enough to warrant forking out for a proper one and all the cleaning paraphernalia that comes with it.

MbatataOwl · 21/07/2022 00:45

It's because idiots here would burn tires, trainers, whatever crap they can find etc on them.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/07/2022 00:50

I don't believe the British population is any more idiotic and irresponsible than any other.
I think the lack of public bbqs here is simply because of the unpredictable weather there isn't huge demand. If the council has a certain leisure budget then spending it on bbq facilities probably isn't the best use. A few covered picnic tables might be better!Grin

TheClitterati · 21/07/2022 02:58

I have a bucket bbq I take to the beach. Reusable, inexpensive & very effective.

grumpytoddler1 · 21/07/2022 03:27

I agree, I once had the decking in my garden completely burnt down because I think a disposable barbecue was put in a bin near my fence. It was terrifying, the bin went up like an inferno in the middle of the night.

Yes.

Well said.

FunDragon · 21/07/2022 04:45

YANBU. They’re horrible, dangerous, unnecessary things. There was a story in the news a few weeks ago about a child who sustained serious burns to her foot after treading on one that had been lightly buried in the sand at the beach.

TheClitterati · 24/07/2022 10:54

People are idiots at the beach. There is an unlimited supply of water available to extinguish the bbq. That poor girl.

Recently a family in front of us up and left beach, leaving their bbq behind. When I pointed out the had forgotten it, well you can guess what happened. It was too hot apparently- I pointed out all the water now 2 meters away from bbq. They started screaming abuse at me & my kids included "what's wrong with you?" 😂😂. Fucking ignorant idiots.

I put bbq out & took it to a bin before the tide got close enough for it to be swept into the sea.

There are too many selfish lazy ignorant people that do this.

Ban the single use bbqs!

SardineJam · 24/07/2022 10:57

It's in work...bills.parliament.uk/bills/3068

balalake · 24/07/2022 10:58

Maybe not banned always, but certainly not on sale when there are higher than average temperatures and/or long periods without rain.
