Artificial sweeteners in everything now?

Anyone else notice how the regular version of sodas such as San Pellegrino and Schweppes mixers now all have sugar AND artificial sweeteners? Not the diet or slimline versions, the regular ones.

They taste awful, and it’s not advertised clearly on the can or bottle unless you read the ingredients list. I feel I can’t yet the classic versions of hardly anything anymore other than Coke and similar beverages.

I rarely drink soft drinks, I have the odd san pellegrino and I use ginger ale or lemonade in my Pimms, so when I do enjoy one of these drinks I’d like for them to taste nice. Aside from the taste issue, I’d also rather avoid all artificial sweeteners if I can, so I find it annoying that they seem to have changed the recipes for all these beverages in their ‘classic’ non diet options to contain a mix of sugar and other sweeteners.

I would like for both options - regular and diet - to be available, and I would like it clearly labelled when an artificial sweetener has been added.

anyone else?

Yes! I wanted a Lipton iced tea last night and it tasted disgusting! Then I noticed it had a new "low calorie" tag on the bottle. This was the regular, not the diet version. Won't be buying this ever again.

I have started a petition to scrap the sugar tax on soft drinks and to stop anti obesity plans for special offers, please feel free to sign and share, the more people that sign the better, we need our sugary drinks back. petition.parliament.uk/petitions/620658?fbclid=IwAR2l_7xbXUQ6eDouD9Y-cKJO5HHqMirDje6W3Bu57fGce0Qk4ebRIg6QOok

Signed!

Thelnebriati · 26/11/2022 13:30

Its only got 115 signatures and I'm the only one who's signed in my constituency, yet no one you speak to says they like artificial sweeteners.

TVWife · 26/11/2022 22:40

Bump
I've signed it too

Glad I've seen this. I also can't tolerate sweeteners as they upset my stomach. (Coeliac also).

I've been having sparkling water with a teapigs cold brew bag in - although not sugary it makes a great cold refreshing drink. Especially over summer.

I’ve got CD too just to warn you M&S have gone back to using artificial sweetners in their low cal soft drinks, I only realised when I started to get stomach problems & checked the ingredients on what I’d recently consumed. Saw they’ve added sucralose in place of stevia

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 03/08/2023 22:43

I really hate sweeteners as well, I hardly ever drink fizzy drinks but as I don't drink alcohol when I go out it's nice to have something fizzy.

Not anymore though as sweeteners give me terrible stomach cramps.

Fever tree is expensive but worth it

Nixx2121 · 04/08/2023 13:49

Agree, M&S do have a range in glass bottles similar to Fever Tree. The problem I have is the carbohydrate content is higher than the other drinks because they use fructose which is fruit sugar and I’ve got Type1 diabetes and they make my glucose levels spike 🙈 I but Karma Cola no added sugar it’s crazy expensive though around £30 for 24, 250 ml cans. Why is it that anything that’s healthy is super expensive 😝

Elphame · 04/08/2023 13:57

I know it's an old thread but it makes sad reading.

Since it was started both Fentiman and Rio have now added sweeteners to their ranges and my choice is further restricted.

MoonsHaunted · 04/08/2023 14:06

I’m praying Coke doesn’t change their full fat and Cherry full fat recipes. They’re my only options now. But I reckon Coke must be making a mint now being the only sweetener-free option. People still buy it even though it costs more than the zero/diet versions because the diet ones are undrinkable to so many.

Why do people keep talking about full fat or fat coke? There isn’t any fat in coke.

it’s a common enough trigger you would think people would realize that maybe that means something about safety.

Sweeteners have been tested endless for decades. They are absolutely safe. Unless you listen to mommy bloggers instead of actual science.

It's true they have been tested and found non-carcinogenic.

It's definitely not true that they have been tested for their impact on gut bacteria, which is likely to be the far more important measure in terms of our overall health.

It's looking very likely that the gut microbiome is like an organ in itself - one whose actions have a huge impact on many of our critical functions. So the state of our microbiome impacts not only the likelihood of obesity and the many other diseases which are thought to be based in inflammation, but also much more surprising things like depression, anxiety and other mental health conditions.

This is why ultra processed foods are so very bad for us, even when they're low in sugar or fat or all the things that the corrupt food industry has told us is the problem, because it makes them more money.

applewood87 · 04/08/2023 16:24

@AngeloMysterioso

People say it to distinguish between Coca Cola and Diet Coke which is needless because the distinction is already there

Yusay · 04/08/2023 16:31

It’s so frustrating! My priority is healthy eating, I want sugar free and sweetener free. I am happy to eat bland food I don’t care. But everything seems pumped full of carcinogenic crap.

Ever eaten something where red food colouring was used? You’ll have eaten coal tar 🤢
