To apply for a new job after only 8 months

8 months ago I started a new job. I quite like what I do - it is home based - but the pay isn't great for my level of experience. There are not many opportunities for progression as far as a I can see - it's a small business. My colleagues are lovely and the job is home based and very flexible- I have 2 kids age 7 and 9 so pick ups etc are not an issue.

I feel a little under-challenged but there are perks to the job as described.

I've seen a job advertised with another company who offer a very similar thing but targets a different market. It's not a huge field though so there might be people who know each other. It's got a more variety in the tasks and more interaction with others. It is mostly home based but occasional meetings in a London head office. The organisation is a lot bigger so I would imagine more room for progression. There is more holiday allowance and some other benefits that I don't currently get. They have not stated the pay , but the application asks for salary expectations so I could aim high there!

I just feel a bit bad because my current employer is lovely and took a roll of the dice with me as I didn't have much experience In the field at the time. They've invested quite a lot in my training so I feel like I should be more loyal.

But, my DH reckons I should apply because loyalty isn't going to pay you a higher salary and you should look after yourself to a degree. Also 8 months probably doesn't look great before hopping jobs.

There is no such thing as loyalty when it comes to employers. Do what's right for you.

Apply for it. It's good interview experience. You don't owe your present employer any loyalty.

This is my husbands view too. It's my first foray into the private sector so not really sure what's expected in terms of new jobs

Apply, if you are successful leave after serving your notice and with as much help as is reasonable for who comes next. Be honest that more benefits and chance of career progression has attracted you.
