To wonder why its only costing £100 to add my son to my car insurance?

I have a Ford Fiesta. My 18yo son passed his test last week, so I've been researching options. I put our details into a comparison site and the cheapest quote was £1000, with a tracking device. But when I phoned my current insurance company (Direct Line) the quote to add him as a named driver was only £100, with no tracking required! 😯 Is this surprisingly low? There is an excess of £750, and he won't build up a no claims discount, but am I missing any other pitfalls? I'm about to accept the quote, but thought I should check first.

@Mmmmdanone it will go down.

When I was picking up my car DS had just passed his test so he was added as a named driver. Due to various circumstances we ended up picking up the car three days later. The insurance premium dropped because DS 18 birthday had been in those three days, the premium had dropped by almost 1k.

Thanks that's reassuring! It's such a shame she can't drive right now. I'll get on to insurance when she's 18.

I got a quote of £2300 to add my 18 year old son as a second driver with no commuting to my insurance, so yes, yours seems very cheap to me too. This was from the insurers I'm already insured with.

I just decided to check out direct line as op quote was so cheap. It came back at £5k with my dd on the insurance! Makes the £2k quote from Churchill look cheap!

Sounds very low. My insurers wanted over 200 to add DD to my Citroen Picasso 2012 insurance - she's 24 and passed at 18.

@Mmmmdanone strange considering Direct Line Group own Churchill and they are both underwritten by UK Insurance

They do vary hugely. When DD was learning the insurance was reasonable. After she passed some quotes were enormous and some wouldn't insure her at all.

BTW, for some fun, if you are using comparison websites, try sorting by highest price. I did this by accident once for DH and me, no children, for an old Ford Fiesta. The highest quote was about 50k! Shock Grin
