Yogasplaining....

Yep, it's a 'thing', lol.

Inspired by a recent chat post about yoga being able to do no wrong. I know several people who quit due to the surrounding evangelicalism and endless 'yogasplaining' in their yoga community.
If someone dares to question any presumptions about yoga (longevity, health, safety, theory and such) it's quite common to get a good slapping down by the obsessived.

One example - My sister has ocular pressure so at risk of glaucoma. All inverted poses (head below heart) like downward dog are quite dangerous for her. When she discovered this she had to quickly adapt her practice and considered giving up after 5 years. When she discussed this with other yogi's the basic response was 'No! Yoga will actually cure that!', so a complete and unquestioning belief that yoga is a supreme form of exercise that couldn't possibly ever cause harm.

There's this unquestioning obsessive worship of yoga, and those who are a part of it will often be the first to accuse the other of needing to 'calm down', basically attempting to shame or pressure anyone who questions something.

As someone who loves yoga but dislikes the hype and commodification, I often think this is yet another fitness trend that will go the way of all fitness trends. And the evangelical die hards will simply cross over to something even more superior and life affirming at the drop of a hat. I have witnessed one yoga group who fell about laughing at a group of weightlifters who dared to go on a retreat, shaming their bodies and calling them 'clumsy'. It's all a bit status-snobbery isn't it?

There are those who get very angry when a simple criticism arises. The person who dares to criticise must be unenlightened and simple, obviously.

YANBU. Yoga can be a fit evangelical/ fanatical. It's one of the reasons I don't bother with it anymore, I like yoga as an exercise but couldn't be dealing with the "culture" surrounding it.

I do love it but it's hard to find sensible conversation. The 'looking down' on other forms of fitness is a bit much. I know everyone isn't like that at all - there's a lovely, helpful community on here! But the downsides are weird.
