To still take DD to appointment?

My childless brother has me doubting myself, please say if IABU.

DD aged 7 has an appointment later, physio.

It’s walking distance from school as its at our GP surgery but run by a community physio (if that makes sense).

Surgery is not airconed but is right next to the canal and river. And in the shade for the most part.

Had a text from both the GP surgery and the community physio team to say appointments are going ahead as usual but more time will be given to each patient due to the heat.

I was planning on still taking DD, she needs this appointment. I don’t have a car as it’s in for MOT so can’t take one – I’ve always walked places if I can though, and taxi will be over £10 which doesn’t seem worth it for such a short walk.

I’m picking her up from school at 2.15, appointment is at 3.30 so we have roughly an hour to walk 0.5m to the surgery. I plan to take a big bottle of water, plus school will fill DDs water bottle before she leaves school (I’ve already asked them to do this and they were fine with it) and part of the route is under trees so we’ll walk under those. DD will also have a hat on (she’s generally pretty good at wearing it).

School have let kids wear their PE kit for today as well so DD is nice and cool in pale blue tshirt and baggy shorts.

My brothers had ago at, told me I’m disgusting, there’s a health warning for the weather, I should cancel or risk DD being very ill.

Everytime I tried to defend my decision he shouted me down, told me I was disguating and didn’t I know children can’t sweat like adults.

DD isn’t that bothered by the heat as long as she has a cold drink and a hat. I plan to go straight to the appointment then straight home.

But I still feel guilty that I’m not cancelling and like I’m putting DD at risk. Brothers still texting me asking me to reconsider the appointment, doesn't seem to understand cancelling one appointment affects the rest of DDs treatment.

I’m a single parent and ExH is only involved for 48 hours a month (2 overnights) so I question every decision.

So WWYD? Cancel or go ahead? Worried if I cancel we’ll get taken off the list as DDs treatment has already started. (She has a muscle condition, walking helps but she has physio in the summer to strengthen her muscles for winter when they're weaker and can be damaged when it's slippy due to wet/ice)

I don't think the OP has suggested the physio is in the middle of scrubland, a fied of wheat or a wood.

Physio appointments are like gold dust on the NHS. Go steady and you'll be fine.

Sounds like you'll have a nice walk tbh. I'd block your brother for the next few hours though so he can't wind you up again.

Banoffe · 19/07/2022 12:01

Tell your brother to but out. You’ve made your plans and taken precautions and your child needs that appointment.

Surely lots of families in the UK go on holidays every year where the temperatures are over 32 and walk to restaurants etc. It's fine. How far is it to walk home after the appointment as dd could be very tired after the session .

Iusyje · 19/07/2022 15:33

Ofcourse take her to the appointment. It's very funny how people are so frightened of the heat yet visit hot places without a second thought.

ittakes2 · 19/07/2022 16:15

Please point out to your brother that, while this weather is unusual for the uk, it’s standard summer weather for many countries around the world and their inhabitants still successfully go about their daily lives without dropping dead or being rushed to hospital for what is effectively a walk home from school.

Yeah hillarious that people have been evacuated.

It isn't scrubland, it's an area where people regularly walk and DC play, and a cut through, but you carry on laughing.

Half a mile walk?

Your brother sounds deranged

Ignore him. He's being dramatic

GoOrNot · 19/07/2022 17:11

We survived!

Water was gone by the time we got there and we got there about 10 minutes before the appointment but otherwise we were fine.

Physio refilled the water, and we had nearly the whole building to ourselves so moved to a cooler part.

Then we stopped at the little corner shop on the way back and bought icecreams and cold drinks.

Very glad we went, we had a longer appointment due to everyone cancelling which meant we've got a lot more done and we can hopefully move onto the next stage of physio in a few weeks.

I'm glad you went to the appointment and it went well. Unless your brother either can take you or pay for the taxi next time, I think he should mind his own business. There's being concerned and then there's being controlling. You did all the right things and icecream afterwards sounds a well deserved treat🍦

Fire isn't to be laughed at. Leicestershire and London fire brigades have now declared major emergencies due to the numbet of fires they are atte

Your brother sounds a little like my FIL. Disapproves from afar but doesn't offer any practical help - like a lift if he's that bothered?
