Please can someone advise re the difference between farrow and ball estate and modern emulsion.
Its for living room. With a woodburner in .more practical use mod emulsion ?
Husband wants to change mind and get it in mod emulsion. Never used.
Is it good and most importantly..
Do the pigments still look as good.?
Is it still matte?
Thanks so much .

It's still nice paint but definitely not as matt. Would be more practical if you needed to wash it down to get rid of dirty marks.

Don't do what my exh did and do part of a wall with estate and part with modern emulsion - very clear difference!

A quick Google tells me modern emulsion is more durable and can be wiped clean

I think the OP is after personal experience and opinions so I don't think your "quick Google" particularly helps. You do know that's why people post on here as opposed to just Googling, right?

If you want it to 'look' like F&B, get the estate emulsion, which is very matt. It can be wiped clean gently with some cold water, or for bigger stains you can just touch it up, which works better than with most other brands of paint as the colour doesn't fade.

F&b was in the sale at b&q last week, was the same price as the b&q branded paint. I would check and see before you pay extra! I would never have paid the normal prices

Modern and estate emulsion look different when side by side but on the wall when you only have one colour I personally don't think you can notice a huge difference. In my old house I had modern emulsion on the walls and it was fairly matt. The walls wiped down easily too.

I have used Hague blue in both paints and they were slightly different colours. The estate one had a blue/green tinge to it and the modern one was all blue, very subtle but definitely a difference. I found the modern easier to apply as it didn’t leave dark streaks in the paint like the estate but preferred the finish of the estate.

I have estate in lounge ( with log burner) and it's beautiful. No marks ( but only adults here)

Estate in the hallway was a disaster but only because of things brushing against it.. even a coat sleeve.

F&B modern emulsion is much better than their matt emulsion. More durable, can wipe down etc. Matt marks so easily and can look shabby quite quickly.

I've used F&B paint for decades and have not noticed a difference in the pigment between matt and modern.

Was chatting to a painter the other day. His take on it was that the Matt stuff is unrivalled for depth of colour, but he said a complete pita to apply as you have to keep a wet edge going at all times otherwise you’re left with streaks and uneven patches, you really have to work fast for the best finish. And you can’t touch it up afterwards as it will streak.

Personally I always get Johnston’s trade colour matched to F&B (Brewers do this) as it’s really good to work with and a bit cheaper.

I've got estate in the living room (with wood burner) and it's fine. It's a beautiful paint, so matt. It's not a room I think needs a wipeable paint.

I have modern in the kitchen diner - still like it, it has a lovely depth of colour, but the finish isn't as gorgeous as estate. I would definitely stick to estate for your living room.

I have heard painters don't like working with F&B, but my experience of both estate and modern is that they are very easy to paint with, no different from Dulux etc. (Little Greene on the other hand was a PITA).
