Aibu to be worried about tin foil on windows?

My husband saw a post online yesterday from someone who used gro blinds on kids windows and in very hot weather their windows cracked due to the blind causing trapped heat. My husband has insisted we remove the gro blinds now during this hot weather and instead has tin foiled the windows up on the inside. I am worried this could also cause them to crack. It is causing me serious anxiety! In one room the window is large 2 large opening windows either side a non opening central pane and the sun beats in from 6am until around 11am.
Aibu to worry about this?

How could it crack the window? It’s only reflecting back the same amount of energy that came in.

Put the foil on the outside?

brokengoalposts · 18/07/2022 23:44

I used to live in south Florida and had tin foil on my bedroom window, never cracked and it was regularly hotter than this.

PickAChew · 18/07/2022 23:46

My only worry would be people reading about it and spraying water on hot windows. It's not enough to keep me awake, though and it's cracked glass, not a catastrophe.

Chouetted · 18/07/2022 23:49

Tin foil on the outside would probably be more sensible, but the foil also won't absorb and trap the heat the way a gro blind will (assuming yours is black on the window facing side), it just reflects it right back out again.

This is why people in hot countries wear white clothes.

No but you might fuck up your glass like I did.

Do NOT leave the tinfoil on for an extended amount of time. I've even had professional window guys out and they can't get rid of the mess that tinfoil left behind on my brand spanking new windows. Heartbreaking!

Well I would have said no but I’ve now seen evidence of it first hand with black gro-blind type stuff today!

Lovelycheese · 18/07/2022 23:52

@coastalwave what did it do to your windows?!

I live in a sauna but the mgmt company said to be careful of covering the windows too much as someone had the glass get damaged in the 2018 heatwave.

i think it sort of bowed or something. Hope the damage isn't too serious.

my main concern with foil is light bouncing off and affecting drivers.

dropthevipers · 18/07/2022 23:56

The only aspect of tin foil that worries me are the people wearing the hats.

PeekAtYou · 18/07/2022 23:57

Dd saw someone on TikTok that ended up with messed up windows.

I've seen several videos on there saying that a soapy water solution on the windows to stick the foil on should be used.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 19/07/2022 00:14

I have hung old curtains over the outside of the windows on the south facing side of my house. They stop the sun getting to the glass and are remarkably effective (and safe!)
As long as it doesn't rain hard...

I'd recommend emergency blankets (the silver and gold crinkly foils you get in first aid kits) rather than tin foil. They're larger and thinner- you can put them on the outside and simply tuck the edges in the window as you close it. They also let a lot of light through while reflecting the heat.

Whataretheodds · 19/07/2022 00:23

Yeo better on the outside.

Lagirl20 · 19/07/2022 00:36

Oh no, I’ve covered all my windows in tin foil due to the insane London heat tonight. Have I damaged my windows? What will happen?!

Adversity · 19/07/2022 01:20

We have put white wallpaper on the outside of the windows, £6 in total and really helps. We do look a bit odd probably.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 19/07/2022 03:50

When I was a child and living in a hot country (many consecutive days over 40*), it was standard to cut a piece of cardboard to the size of the window and cover that in foil. It made it very easy to move in and out.
