To wonder what will happen to food banks when

Nobody has anything left to donate because they are all feeling the squeeze themselves.

It's tight for everyone and as they only rely on donations what would happen?

Ragruggers · 18/07/2022 12:13

Not everyone will feel the squeeze so hopefully those that can give will continue to donate. It will be hard for so many.

CMOTDibbler · 18/07/2022 12:15

We are very lucky and don't feel a squeeze and have upped our donations (monetary and physical) to the local food bank and community cupboard deliberatly

Harridan1981 · 18/07/2022 12:15

Many have financial donations too

SleepingStandingUp · 18/07/2022 12:15

Well it isn't tight for everyone, so really it depends who donates. Yes it's likely to see a drop when it's needed most but I guess we all just have to do what we can.

KittenKong · 18/07/2022 12:16

Some local shops donate too.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 18/07/2022 12:16

As @CMOTDibbler says. We appreciate how lucky we are and have been upping our donations to take that into consideration. Hopefully others will feel the same.

Thelnebriati · 18/07/2022 12:17

YANBU. The holes are so big now you can no longer call it a safety net.

FarmerRefuted · 18/07/2022 12:21

Short answer? People would die.

For example, www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/sep/09/david-clapson-benefit-sanctions-death-government-policies

Mrsjayy · 18/07/2022 12:21

One I volunteer at buys food and gets supermarket surplus although donations from the donation stations are down slightly

MooseBreath · 18/07/2022 12:24

We used to donate to a couple items to the food bank every shop. We're now at just one per shop. Once October hits, we'll hopefully be able to continue donating once per month. My guess is, there are a lot of people like us who will have to cut back on donations purely to feed their own families.

ClocksGoingBackwards · 18/07/2022 12:24

Plenty of people can still afford extras. The cost of living might have gone up for everyone but that doesn’t mean that everyone can’t afford it.

Food banks will be in a better position than many other essential charities because of supermarket donations and those from schools at harvest etc.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 18/07/2022 12:36

People are either very generous ( in proportion with what they can afford) or they don't give at all. I work in a,supermarket and can't say that I have noticed a change in the amount of items being put in the donation trolley, although there seems to be more own labels than branded now.

Really? We’ve had poverty in the past eg the 60s and 70s and no food banks and people weren’t dying of starvation in the U.K. How did people manage to get food then?

linelgreen · 18/07/2022 12:54

Perhaps in the past people budgeted and prioritised better I park near to a local foodbank and it's rare that you see anyone coming out without being glued to a mobile ohone, many of them smoke and they are then waiting for taxis to take them home!

TimeToLose8 · 18/07/2022 12:59

Wow @linelgreen .....have you followed any to the betting office as well?

Eeksteek · 18/07/2022 12:59

We don’t donate anymore. I simply can’t find room in my budget. I’m expecting it to be short term and it’s something I will put back in early on. I don’t miss it as much as feeding the birds (and obviously I do miss my own treats too, I’m not a saint!) but not being able to be generous feels pretty crappy, to be honest. Logically I know that that absence of generosity through necessity isn’t meanness, but it feels a lot like it to me.

Itawapuddytat · 18/07/2022 13:00

We can't afford to donate as much as we used to, but still donate a couple of things at every weekly shop and not planning to stop that.

HuffleWoof · 18/07/2022 13:02

@Baaa did you read the article that was linked?

TitInATrance · 18/07/2022 13:04

I donate money, if October doesn’t affect me too badly I’ll raise the amount. If it does, I’ll cut other charitable donations before that one.

Bestshapeever · 18/07/2022 13:05

I created a standing order every month rather than give bits here and there

Of course they starved. There are millions of families in the uk today who are rationing food with the children permanently hungry. Malnutrition related health conditions such as rickets have made an alarming comeback. I know my local food banks are really struggling, there’s loads of appeals going out on social media.

People did die of starvation in the 1800s

Definitions of poverty and how we help the poor have changed - in the 70s dole money would be given and would see you through

Nowadays we spend more making rules and hoops to prevent benefit fraud ...

I expect the taxis are taking them to Manchester Airport to jet off on all inclusive luxury foreign holidays

Where they lounge for the rest of the day in their pjs, in front of their 100" tv, no doubt.🙄
