I get it’s not great for the environment, but it’s only a one off or two off

But that’s what everyone thinks about their unnecessary journeys, “it’s just a one-off”. Then collectively all those one-offs just drive (no pun intended) the temperature higher. Plus think of the people who have to be out working today to assist those who break down, or get stuck if the road melts, or attend traffic accidents in this heat. Stay off the roads and try to keep your home cool instead, and eat 10,000 ice lollies instead.

Sooverthisnow · 18/07/2022 08:08

Put on damp clothes from the washing machine. They’ll keep you cool and your body heat will dry them at the same time.
Good for the environment and no ironing!

Maybe walk or drive to an air conditioned shop or other public space rather drive around needlessly?

During a hot spell a long time ago when I was working away and staying in a hotel next to a busy road so couldn't really open the windows, I walked to the big supermarket half a mile down the road and spent quite a bit of time studying the contents of the fridges and freezers.

Incredibly selfish and very unreasonable.

Manage the inside temp.of your house through ventilation/ cooling

Drink cool drinks.

Cold flannel over your body (head /armpits)

Feet in cold water bucket

Wet a muslin, wring it out and put in front of open shaded window, any draft coming through will be cooler.

So many things to do before you decide to burn more fuel needlessly

sheabatta · 18/07/2022 08:14

YABU but you'll still do it. Windows down and pour water on yourself if you want to stay cool.

Shade17 · 18/07/2022 08:29

No you use more fuel using air con when you're not on the motorway. That's when it's most beneficial to your fuel.

Window open on normal drives is what saves your fuel.

Modern cars use barely any extra fuel to run the A/C.

Loics · 18/07/2022 08:30

YANBU, if the extra fuel use isn't an issue for you then crack on. I'd do it if we didn't have home A/C, I've had the air con on constantly while in the car the last few days, it's horrible without it.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/07/2022 08:35

I'm going to drive to an NT house as it will be cool in there!

CatchingSocks · 18/07/2022 08:38

What? Just sit in a cold bath!!!

Behaviours like you suggest are why we're in this mess

camelfinger · 18/07/2022 08:38

People sit in their cars immediately outside my house with their engines chugging. They do it in winter when it’s cold and summer when it’s hot. It stinks, it’s noisy, you can feel the heat coming out the exhaust, and that’s without even mentioning the pollution aspects. I hope petrol continues to get more expensive as this kind of behaviour really pisses me off.

CecilyP · 18/07/2022 08:39

It’s fine to use air con for your essential journeys in the heat; of course it is. It is not OK to use the car just to use the air-con. Many shops are cool as are many buildings that have few windows. Take yourself off somewhere like this if you are not working. Otherwise a cool shower will cool you down.

Yes this kind of thing is a really good idea.

Porcupineintherough · 18/07/2022 08:46

Yeah, great idea. Air quality deteriorates massively in the heat and we all need to do our bit to make sure as many of the undeserving poor as possible die of respiratory distress.

Sceptre86 · 18/07/2022 09:28

would be an idiotic thing to do based on the cost of fuel and to the environment. If you don't have to work go to a shopping centre. Otherwise take sensible precautions at home and remember it is only for a bloody few days!

Norgie · 18/07/2022 09:29

If you switch the control to recirculate the air inside the car, rather than having it flowing into the car from outside, it saves fuel when you have the air con on.

What's modern? Does this include 10-15 year old cars that were cheap to start with?
