Shall I keep my child off tomorrow

anon2334 · 17/07/2022 18:39

School is still open. Headteacher is very strict, too much. They will do an unauthorised absence for tomorrow. Mt child has sensory issues and has been diagnosed, I suspect more but no diagnosis for that year 4 and goood attendance so surely can't get into much trouble for this. Im in South East where it'd being predicted 40c + car journey and my air con doesn't work. What would you do ?

Your child, you decide. Mine will be in school but they have no sensory issues and I am confident they will be ok. Please OP, only you know your DC and If you think they’d be better at home then do that.

Tillsforthrills · 17/07/2022 18:43

I’d keep him off if you think he’ll be uncomfortable.

Monoandsix · 17/07/2022 18:44

Currently having this discussion with DH. DS9YO is autistic, very fair skinned and does not like the heat at all. I thought he would be OK but he's been grumpy today just loafing around the house.

Our school will authorise absence and are only open the next two days.

ffs
think we need a heatwave topic

EmmiJay · 17/07/2022 18:46

I'm keeping my DD home. I've already got the school stuff out for the next two days. Do what you think is best I say.

SimplyAmy1 · 17/07/2022 18:49

I’d keep your child off regardless of any diagnosis they may or may not have, I’m in the south east too- my phone is now saying 41°, I know there are a few schools closing. I have a 7 month old who is very irritable already! X

QuillBill · 17/07/2022 18:51

It's up to you. It's your child.

Creameggs223 · 17/07/2022 18:58

Why do you want other people to decide what is best for your child? You feel staying off is best keep them off. Mine will be in as I have to work so no choice really.

Seashor · 17/07/2022 19:01

I’m hoping parents keep their children off if they know that they won’t cope. My head will be expecting business as usual tomorrow and it’s going to be a long, long day.

alphapie · 17/07/2022 19:02

I've taken mine out since Monday last week, so we can enjoy the weather together and days out before the school holiday rush!

So if you think it's best just take them out, last week of school is a nothing week anyway

Houseplantmad · 17/07/2022 19:03

Not having air con in the car isn’t an excuse, is it? I’ve got to drive to a hospital appointment in an non aircon car, probably much further than your school run. You just get on with it and have the windows open.
Our school has given parents the choice as it was supposed to be sports day tomorrow. We’re not expecting many to come to school and all will be given an authorised mark, as long as they phone in before 8.20am.

Perfumbaby · 17/07/2022 19:03

My nursery has asked people where possible to keep their kids home and my office has said wfh if you want to because it's sensible to not make people take the tube in 40 degree heat. I know people who are walking distance to the office and they're saying - get me to the fully air conditioned office thanks! People coming in on the tube are like- hell no.

Do what's right for you and your kids. It's going to vary for everyone. With an extreme weather warning in place - your school wouldn't have a leg to stand on trying to come after you with a fine.

Thefriendlymoth · 17/07/2022 19:03

Last week presumably so I doubt they will be missing huge amounts, especially given most schools are cutting back timetables/activities due to the heat anyway. if you feel it benefits your child, call up Mon and say sickness on Sat and so will be back on Tues due to 48 hour rule if you are worried about U.A. If not, just say you are worried about your child due to their diagnosis. I think lots of parents will be keeping their kids home if they can, don’t feel bad.

Galileu · 17/07/2022 19:07

We home ed, but all their remaining activities and end-of-term stuff for tomorrow and Tuesday has been cancelled.

I agree with pp. Do what you feel is right for your DC. In the absence of a school day, just aim to make low-key activities nourishing ones.

Bokky · 17/07/2022 19:11

DD is at secondary school and they've planned a week of extra curricular activities that children would not normally get the opportunity to do. Most of the activities on Monday and Tuesday are sports and are outdoors so I'm not sending her in. I've not heard from the school that anything is cancelled so not prepared to take the risk tbh.

FourChimneys · 17/07/2022 19:11

I think unprecedented numbers of children are going to have "positive Covid tests" this week.

SueSaid · 17/07/2022 19:14

Last week of school is a waste of time anyway. Keep them off, it's only a day.

You're right it isn't an excuse but it is if your child has sensory issues and is already overwhelmed and the car is in inferno at 30c let alone more! Windows down in extreme heat doesn't help does it for pick up at 3.

Take them in, get them registered and then come back for them an hour later

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/07/2022 19:16

Keep him off if you think that’s better for him due to sn

dont worry about an unauthorised absence. Really means nothing

but suprised by head being so inflexible

NrlySp · 17/07/2022 19:17

Plenty of water - freeze it tonight . A hat. Suncream applied before school.
At pick up bring a cold snack, water spray bottle. Then into the garden for some water play.
Tonight open bedroom windows. Close them at 7:30am and keep the doors and windows and curtains shut all day. That way the temperature in the room doesn’t get too high.

SunflowerGardens · 17/07/2022 19:18

Wouldn't even consider sending him in if the heat is likely to cause him difficulties!

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 17/07/2022 19:18

Mine aren't going, I am going to say they're feeling ill. We just got an email saying that at one of the schools, they're opening all the windows and closing the blinds. The windows should be closed on a hot day, they always have them open and it's boiling in their classroom! I've never trusted that particular school with sun safety either.

Roselilly36 · 17/07/2022 19:19

Entirely your choice, you are mum.

vroom321 · 17/07/2022 19:21

Both my dds have asked to stay home as their friends are.

If school close I'll gladly keep them gone but until school day so I don't want another absence as they were off all last week.
