To say that assuming history will repeat is both lazy and dangerous???

Friend A has been diagnosed with an early stage disease. Because Aunt Maud was diagnosed with late stage same disease in 1989 the family are whispering in hushed tones and have all but picked out the coffin for Friend A who is expected to make a full recovery.

Friend B’s child (ambitious, extremely confident) has ended up at the same uni as their father (highly intelligent, very shy). Child is of a different class, has had a totally different life experience, reacts differently and only went to this Uni accidentally due to the course subject. Family have already made remarks about “following in father’s footsteps” assumed the child didn’t earn their place and expect them to follow the same life mould.

Both families are lovely and not malicious but AIBU to think these kinds of assumptions put a lot of pressure on the affected party. Actually history is extremely unlikely to repeat as life has changed and we are all very different.
