Hosepipe ban

Anotherdayanotherdisappointment · 17/07/2022 11:51

Every summer hatwave growing up (80s/90s) we had hosepipe bans. Not heard about bans in recent years. Has our water inferstructure changed so hosepipe bans are no longer needed? Or is there another reason?

So to phrase as an AIBU...

AIBU to think hosepipe bans are no longer necessary?

I do believe they're necessary and think we will have one soon tbh

Gizlotsmum · 17/07/2022 11:54

I think we could still get hosepipe bans but people have become more water savvy, devices more water efficient and infrastructure improved. All of which help. However there is only so much water available and a limited amount which can be supplied at a time so it could still happen. Wet winters help with water storage levels

I put the sprinkler on my lawn last night for the first time this year and had a text from my water company an hour later asking me not to use a sprinkler or hose pipe for the next few days.

Damnautocorrect · 17/07/2022 11:59

The water board just apply to drain more natural resources and rivers now instead.

having sat listening to neighbours sprinklers going full blast for the last week. It’s madness. Madness.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 17/07/2022 12:12

How do I know if I'm on a hosepipe ban ? I've got a massive pool in the garden , not a paddling pool and actual pool , we dont fill it up often but instead of using the hosepipe to water my flowers I might use the pool water

Againstmachine · 17/07/2022 12:13

I think everyone ought to be on meters so they pay for what they use.

FacebookPhotos · 17/07/2022 12:14

Hosepipe bans are needed when there has been insufficient rain for a significant period of time. If a heatwave is short the water supplies are replenished before they get too low.

I wouldn't be surprised if we have a ban later in the summer though, unless we have quite a rainy early august.

Genevieva · 17/07/2022 12:14

I think water metres make people more mindful of excess water consumption. Also, while it is hot and dry now, we have had a lot of rain this year, so our local reservoir is still completely full.

RedWingBoots · 17/07/2022 12:14

Unlike the begining of this century, lots more people live in homes that have water meters so they paying for their consumption. People with water meters tend to limit their consumption of water.

Maybe water companies could spend some of their profits on fixing leaky pipes.

There are some requirements about this already - our water bill went down this year compared to last year because Thames Water didn’t meet the required standards for fixing leaks.

emmathedilemma · 17/07/2022 12:25

To a certain extent yes, leakage levels in the uk are around half what they were 20-25 years ago. And hopefully we’ve got better at resource management.

LunaLoveFood · 17/07/2022 12:27

We've had an email from water company asking us not to use hose pipes. Not a ban yet but asking us not to use.

yikesanotherbooboo · 17/07/2022 12:27

Ponds around us are quite full still so maybe there are still sticks of water.
Most people know not to water lawns and hopefully try to limit baths and showers.

megletthesecond · 17/07/2022 12:29

No one needs a water sprinkler. Grass goes brown in heat and perks up again when it rains.

But it looks absolutely awful. And if you have a nice garden and want to keep it nice you need to water it.

TamSamLam · 17/07/2022 12:31

We have a hosepipe ban, letter came yesterday.
Also free bottled water because of an outage that didn't happen.

ItIsMyName · 17/07/2022 12:34

Southern England is already water stressed. Due to low winter rainfall and the dry conditions water co are already talking about hosepipe bans and if we continue to have this weather they will be implemented. Although in 2012 when Thames announced a hose pipe ban it started chucking it down the next day and we had a pretty soggy summer!

It looks fine.

It actually looks awful if it is green as it shows you don't care about the environment.

RedWingBoots · 17/07/2022 12:37

@Againstmachine some homes due to the construction of pipes can't have water meters.

Hmm.

I don’t think anyone who drives / eats out in air conditioned places/ essentially lives in our western world with its non eco friendly standards really has a leg to stand on when having a go about someone using a hose pipe to drench their garden during the few days of hot weather we get.

janj2301 · 17/07/2022 12:38

not all homes can be put on meters, we share mains with many neighbours and there is no room to place a meter on each pipe to each house, we would benefit from a meter as we are very low users so keep asking but the water board keeps saying no.

darlingdodo · 17/07/2022 12:38

Afterfire, watering a lawn when it's very hot does the lawn no good at all.

Water meters are a good idea - we can pretty much tell which of our neighbours are on metered water - they're the ones who don't power wash their drives, put the sprinklers on overnight (all night 😡) and empty and refill the kids paddling pools every day.

TheVillageBaker · 17/07/2022 12:43

I don't think there would be much point because as this site shows, a lot of people just don't care. They want to shower 2 or 3 times a day, wash the car, make their flowers look nice, refill a gigantic pool everyday...god forbid they just restrain themselves for a few weeks 🙄
