People driving at 50mph on a 60mph road

impossibldream · 17/07/2022 08:55

I have to use an A road most days which has a national speed limit (60mph). It seems like I’m always stuck behind some idiot driving along at 50mph. I find it so hard not to get wound up. It just results in people trying to overtake (sometimes taking risks so I think it increases a chance of accidents) and generally increasing levels of stress. Why do people do this? AIBU to find it rude and annoying?

You do realize that 60 will be the MAXIMUM speed limit; there's no law that says that everyone must travel at that ,don't you?

Exactly this. ^ It's bullshit to say that an examiner would FAIL someone doing 50 in a 60 zone. If they're going crazy slow, (like 35 mph) then that's just irksome and dangerous, but 50 is not 'too slow.' Hmm

Honestly if it's making you rage so so much I don't think you should be on the road

🙄

Sally090807 · 17/07/2022 12:24

Depends on the road, weather conditions etc, just because it’s 60mph doesn’t mean you have to drive bang on 60. Even if you drive at 60 there will always be some knob up your arse itching to overtake.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 17/07/2022 12:25

Another thing - as I said earlier - the vast majority of test instructors would not take a learner driver doing a driving test on a 60 mph road anyway!

Angrymum22 · 17/07/2022 12:55

Having just taught my son to drive I have drummed into him that if someone is driving slowly it is likely to be for a good reason.
Whatever that reason, show some respect and consideration.

If you are unfamiliar with a road caution is far better than ending up upside down in a ditch.
Your knowledge of the road means you are confident driving at 60. Think about how you drive when you don’t know a road, you probably don’t drive to the speed limit consistently on unfamiliar roads.

Living rurally you very much drive to the conditions despite the speed limit. The most dangerous roads to drive on are the rural roads where the speed limit is often 60 but if you make a mistake you are far more like to hit a tree or building at a speed that is likely to kill you.

With increasing numbers of electric cars on the roads your going to come across more and more drivers driving at speeds that optimise charge. Onboard computers are influencing our driving skills more and more. And with soaring fuel prices driving economically also influences speed.

Babyboomtastic · 17/07/2022 12:56

A 40mph or 50mph road has been specifically judged as being suitable for going at 40 or 50 for example. A competent driver, in optimum conditions should be able to drive fairly close to it, though it's not a target.

NSL is different, it's often effectively ungraded roads, with a maximum of 60, but where you use your common sense.

On a straight, wide, A road, 60 may be perfectly safe, for other NSL roads it would be suicide. Single tracks, 90 degree bends, blinds, high hedges, sometimes all of these, and even doing 30-40mph may be dangerous.

I prefer to be cautious with speed on country roads that I don't know. I think that's far Sagar than dissolve assuming that any road with a technical 60mph limit is safe at that speed.

Both of the roads below are at NSL. I wouldn't want to guys the life expectancy of anyone navigating tiny lanes such as these at that speed.

No it wouldn't.

Yes, it would!

Either via tallying marks or an automatic fail.
I know I failed by not making progress.

How can 50 in a 60 be too slow when it’s the actual limit for some vehicles?

impossibldream · 17/07/2022 09:05

Sorry I should have said this is a straightsh road with no sharp bend and good vision. Absolutely no reason at all to do 60mph.

Absolutely no reason to do 50?

What about fuel costs?
It's much more fuel efficient to drive at 50.

I'm one of those people you will be "stuck behind" .

If you are in such a hurry leave earlier.
Otherwise bog off

60 I meant, on motor way,
50 on other country road where limit is 60

The examiner would be marking you on your ability to control the vehicle you are driving. They're not going to mark you for a van if you're driving a car.😂

On a trip to Cornwall, I was driving at around 100mpH on the Mway, behind me for a long stretch of the journey was a woman min age 80plus doing the same.😂

Agrudge · 17/07/2022 13:20

60 on the motorway is ridiculous. Unless it's the speed limit for your vehicle

If your not competent confident to drive at the limit stay at home and mow the lawn.

To be fair (and I don't do this) you can always just sit behind a lorry in the slow lane. At a safe distance, obviously. I don't see that that would inconvenience anyone except yourself.

Why?

Plenty of opportunity to get past. Lots of lorries doing 60 mph so you would be driving at the same speed as them.

Why is it ok for a lorry to do 60 mph on a motorway but not a car?

Oblomov22 · 17/07/2022 13:24

They would and do fail them. I taught Ds1 last year and they have a stretch of 50, on that test, at that test centre. Not that's that particular speed limit is relevant to what I'm saying, re driving too slowly. That test centre has failed a student for driving too slowly, because it's a sign of not being confident enough, not being proficient enough.

I agree.

And in Scotland the max for hgv lorries on a single carriageway (exception of a9 between Perth and Inverness where it's 50) is 40mph.

Where I am it is very unlikely you will complete a journey using nsl roads where there isn't multiple vehicles going much slower than 60 by law.

Well I’m not sure about 😂 as you and the octogenarian were both driving at around 100mph. If you were on your test and driving at 40%+ over the limit you would definitely fail.

User8394721 · 17/07/2022 13:33

We often sit behind a lorry doing 60 on the motorway, it's called drafting and is good for fuel efficiency

Because a car isnt restricted to 60. On a motorway with free flowing traffic theres no need to do under the speed limit.unless the weather is pouring it down

There not much in it fuel consumption wise for my car. Even 85mph is still 50+ mpg

It's more drivers who insist on doing 60 in the middle lane and just sitting there without moving across. and any one doing under 70 in the inside lane .

AlwaysLatte · 17/07/2022 13:35

I don't think there's anything wrong with 50 in a 60 - 60 is the max, not the specified speed. Why are people so impatient to overtake? They won't gain much.

We'll speeding at 30mph above the speed limit wouldn't just be a major fault, it would be a dangerous one.

If you had an accident at that speed, it would be charged as dangerous driving.

Its shocking that is worthy of a laughing emoji face.

With that sorry of attitude to the road, you shouldn't be driving.

User8394721 · 17/07/2022 13:36

Who are these road police on here telling others what speed to do.

Fizbosshoes · 17/07/2022 13:37

There are instances where it might be advisable to drive slower than 60mph on a motorway, due to bad weather and poor visibility, no matter how competent or confident you are about driving

They want to do 50 that's good enough reason I bet your one on them people that go right up your arse to try and get you to faster cant stand it
